Packing food in jaws

Show-Me Whitetails
I have never seen this before. I had a healthy fawn who is now about 2 months old, 3 weeks ago I noticed his jaws were puffed out. I have dealt with Lump-Jaw. I could see from a distance that he prob had grass or grain packed between his cheek and jaw. I darted the fawn and sure enough, it had grass and grain packed in its lower jaws. I pulled out a big clump of chewed up food and rinsed his mouth out, wormed him and gave him some antibiotics. The next day he had his jaws puffed up and full of grass again. Sometimes he gets rid of it ( I can tell by looking) and the next day it is full again. He is starting to have a rough coat and is falling behind the other fawns in size a little. Tooth problem? I have no idea what to do for him, but I don't see him thriving if he continues to do this. Darren

We have some friends that has the exact same thing going on. He looks like a chipmunk and he has been down twice and teeth filed down and next day is back the same. Didnt see anything wrong inside his mouth. Hate to say it but hes not much bigger then a fawn and hes a yearling.

Thanks for responding Jerrilee. I had thought of filing his teeth. I looked his teeth over when I had him down, and they looked normal to me. Chipmunk is a perfect description of what this fawn is doing.

the farm has had issues with lumpy jaw in the past. wondered if it had something to do with that. I'm not sure what age he started it. i wondered too if he didn't have something wrong with his tmj joint.

What that is is a quid. It is due to a parasite that causes restricted blood flow to the jaw. It will continue to return and will eventually kill the deer. Sorry about that but once they have a quid we have never had luck reversing it. We treat each year with wazine 34 which can be put in the water and will prevent this. I believe it is a nematode that causes it. Again, once they have this issue we have not had any luck reversing it, only preventing it in the first place with the wazine.

Gary, thanks for the info, I bet that is exactly what it is. That makes sense. I have never had that happen before--at first glance, not a big deal, but after thinking about it I thought he would eventually die if it continued, from infection, choking or something. Darren

Wild Rivers, I'm on the same page with you, and I'm curious if anyone has had luck with piperazine salts as an anthelmintic for arterial parasites? As an intestinal anthelmintic, piperazine salts basically paralyzes the worm, which flushes out a few days later. Research is sketchy at best regarding it's efficacy in the bloodstream...Like I said, though, it's just a question posed as curiosity, These parasites are also known to enter into the cerebrum...which makes any treatment modality moot.

I am open to any ideas for treatment, I have been raising deer since 1996 but I still learn everyday. Sometimes people are slow to post on something like this for fear of sounding "dumb'. This little bucks pedigree is so good that I don't even want to tell what it is and it really doesn't matter. Any ideas on treating him would be greatly appreciated. Darren 417 880 4239

Trying something new on him, I will let you know if it works. Thanks for the calls and pms. There is a wealth of knowledge out there from people who read these forums, I hope I can help someone with a problem in the future. Darren

Wild Rivers-

Does the wazine you mention, prevent lumpy Jaw as well or is it a preventive thing for this quid you speak of?

I have never had Lumpy Jaw in my deer before, But I just changed my feed over about 2 weeks ago now and all of the sudden I have one adult doe with a tennis ball sized bulge under her jaw and a buck fawn with about a golf ball sized lump on the bottom of his jaw.

I have no clue what it is or if I can even dart the buck fawn to check it out? Ive never darted a fawn before.

dream'n

my husband darts our fawns with the pistol or blow dart

half inch dart

not for me, scares me , unless i HAVE to like last fall when we had ehd

Wazine 34 is for parasites and worms. It is one way to deworm without having to get your hands on the deer. You can just put it in the water. It is a good idea to change up the wormers you use. That way they don't build up a resistance to one.

May seem strange that this can be caused by a parasite, the quid, but it is.

I currently use a "safeguard" pellet dewormer that I mix into the feed ever other month. I wonder if trying that Wazine wont help maybe rotate that in if they go after the parasite/worm a different way.

Is it safe for fawns if they are drinking out of the same water tanks??

I don't think twice about darting fawns, to treat them with meds or tranquilize them. If just giving meds, you cant tell how much of the med. actually got into the fawn because of bounce off. If I put the fawn down I can give it all of the shots it needs. I use a 1/2 needle darts and hit them in the rump, with a 1/2 cc of telezol rompun mix. I reverse them them 30 min. later with 1/2 cc of reversal. I take all precautions --head downhill, and keep them cool, and spray any blood with fly spray. I have never had a problem doing this. Rotate deworm ears is a good idea. It is safe for fawns. We put it out for a day or two at most in each pen and cover the water cups. Not a good idea to do it when it is really hot out.

WRW-

do you add anything like flavoring to it? I cleaned the water buckets added the treated water(only water there able to get at) and left it in there for about 36 hours. They only drank about half of what they would normally drink in 24 hours.

I didn't want to stress them so dumped it and gave them new clean water again.

I am just wondering for next time if I can add anything to get them to drink more?
