I'm looking for some advice on people that treaspass around our deer pens . Today I had some people (3) a father and his 2 son's that went all the way around my deer pens without any permission and tonight my breeder or back up buck is limpy badly on his right front leg . I can see his pastern or ankle is quite swollen and he won't put any weight on it . I called the sherriff's out to talk to the people up by the pens as they were in over 40 acres from the road . What do I do if this buck needs treatment or has a broken foot or leg ? Any advice ?? I don't want to be a hard nose and cause problems I don't need . But this is a decent buck too . What would you do ? Thank You .

We are along a county highway and have people topping all the time. We have no trespassing signs all over but once in a while we will have people walk up to the fence. The deer definitely do not like it. If we see them we tell them they are welcome to look from their cars but the minute they get out the deer will run as far away as they can get. If you are in a way from the road can you put a cable across your drive?

Police report...pictures...any and all the documenteion you can put together concerning the event/evidence of these MORONS thinking they can just walk on someone's property like that.

I've had people walk right up my driveway headed back to my deer pens as I sat in my living room watching them walk by...they didn't think or have the decency, actually just the COMMON SENSE to even knock on my door that they walked right by.

Wooden Acres - Don't ever think that you're being a hard case to protect yourself from moronic behavior. As I said, document EVERYTHING you can, vet bills, etc etc. Those people are responsible for their action and any damage that you can ''prove''.

Thank you all for the advise ! The buck thats hurt is no super deer but he's all I got for a back up with decent genetic's . I AI all the doe's but I need this guy for a backup ! I'll document everything and get some pictures as well ! Thank you !!

I've always said if you were to go to these folks home and walk up into their yard to look at their back yard they would have the cops on you.

I had a guy drive past two homes open a yard gate and drive right past us while we were roofing a shed. We Jumped down and went after him and asked what the f**k he was doing. His responce was I just wanted to get a closer look at the animals. Man talk about balls. My responce was get the hell out of here you jerk. They really have no clue what problems they can cause.

Ross,

I have heard about some of the problems by your place. Start by putting up signs and keep records. I don't know why people think it is their right to walk up to our livestock and visit. Go to the zoo. Almost all of us are willing to show people around, if they would just knock on the door and ask. Hope all is well with your buck.

If you believe you are owed compensation for the damage to the deer, file a clerk-suit in your county, against the trespassers. My standard procedure is to hold the trespassers (any way I can) until law enforcement arrives and get a copy of the police report after the trespassers are arrested. Then if you have damages, there is a record of who is responsible.

Signs are a great idea and can and will certainly help, but don't put up the normal ''No Trespassing'', ''Do Not Enter'', or ''Private Property'' signs.

These are simply too common and everybody thinks it doesn't mean ''them''!

I think it's best to get more personal and specific to your situation. I had some personal signs made up that helped ALOT, they read as follows:

ATTENTION: DO NOT UNDER ANY

CIRCUMSTANCE WHATSOEVER

APPROACH THIS FENCE UNLESS

ACCOMPANIED BY OWNER -

MARK FLICKINGER

These signs helped tremmendously, but believe it or not, we had a few(very few) walk right on by these signs, and they obviously thought the signs were not meant for them.

So, if I was making more signs up, I would add this at the end of what I already have:

YES, THIS DOES MEAN YOU, NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE!!!

What these people don't realize is they can do some SERIOUS damage over even cause death to our deer just by ''looking'' at our deer. And in looking at our deer, they of course don't have sense enough to all stay together, so they spread out, and when they spread out, the deer have the sense they are being surrounded even when beiing viewed from one side of the pen, and the possibilities for bad things to happen begin to escalate very rapidly.

And who knows what these morons are attempting to feed our deer and/or feeding them!

I probably shouldn't be calling anybody morons...but what they do flys in the face of and doesn't even stand the test of good ole fashioned common sense, let alone common decency and respect for anothers property.

There is NO sign that means anything in PA....until the law enforcement takes trespassing seriously in our State nothing is going to work!! except a gun but that will land you in jail......LOL.......you need to be ignorant and kick them off every chance you get.........I am a Christian and it's hard but do it with good sense.........the only other thing that may work is to post your property so heavily that they have to use scissors to cut through the signs to get to you deer....this just might work in our state.......:eek:

I got some no treaspassing signs up but no one ever seems to read them . I find it hard to beleive that so many people think they can just walk around on someone else's property like they do . I have a fairly decent elk bull thats about 25 yards off the road and everyone seems to think they need his picture . Then they just migrate right on up to the deer pens and the deer freak out . The elk couldn't care less but the deer are soooo much different , anything different and they go bannanas . Tomorrow we're knocking the buck down as his left ankle or pasture is huge , swollen quite badly . Hope to inject some Penicillin into his foot / ankle area and give Draxxin in the the hind quarter . Any other ideas ? You've all been very informative and I do plan on making this guy pay for at least something . I just couldn't beleive a guy , a father wouldn't say something to his kids when the deer were going nuts . Really baffles me and I'll be moving the elk away from the deer , seems he's drawing a bit to much attention !! Thanks everyone !!

we really do put up hot wires helps with dogs and people . Some people can't read but they know pain LOL!

Just make sure you mark the wire with a yellow sign with a lighting bolt for those that can't read

we have dogs that keep them away and if that dont work i greet everyone with a shotgun

good way to get yourself shot ,or put in jail. no call for deadly force.

Unfortunately, this seems to happen way more than it ever should. My theory is that you CAN NOT in any way be nice to these people. I usually go off like a crazy guy...it works good when you have a gun in your hand. Sometimes they need the cops to protect them from me.

It seems that every person that visits our farm the respectful way, by asking, usually ends up asking me if I ever had problems with trespassers or poachers. My reply is always simply, " Not since I shot that first guy back in 2004, I haven't had any problems" I say it with as much seriousness and boldness that I can. It usually gets the point across. I sometimes worry if they are there to check out what I have in the pens to sneak back later and shoot. Of course the 3 trained german shepherds, and 3 bloodhounds that greet them when they come up the driveway usually deters any further bad thoughts they may have.

My wife breeds and raises working german shepherds imported from Germany and Czechoslovakia. They are trained for attack, just like military and police dogs. As a matter of fact, our rejects are sold for police dogs. I would suggest anyone to have some dogs like these around for home protection. Not just deer farmers, any home owner. These are great family dogs and great with children...not so good with strangers. Our neighbors think we have wolves. For some reason, I don't have any issues. I can't imagine why. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Jack Do you think your not liable if your dogs bite someone?

John do you own whitetails? It kinda sounds like you are on the sides of the the people that go on private property which in fact tears up our animals. Liable for someone coming on my property, walking past signs that say to stay out. Yeah i will take my chances but i sure would not want to be one of the ones crossing the line!
