Protocall when you know a dart doesn't fire?

Hey Guys, When reversing what do "most people" do, inject IM or IV ? Obviously the animal is out so you have the choice. Just like everything else some do it one way others another way. I would think doing it IV would be the more "efficient" delivery of the drug therefore maybe only needing a smaller dose. Is my logic off base? Maybe it doesn't make any difference. You guys have alot more experience than I do. What do you think?? Thanks, Tom

Roger,

My truck does know how to travel north. Just because I live in the South doesn't mean I haven't tranqued deer in the north. Oh yea, I have flown before too!

Hey roger, just for kicks and giggles tell me where you place the dart on your northern deer in the winter. just curious if you have a thick fat layer why would you shoot for the rump area. I normally place the dart in the front shoulder because the shoulder blade has less fat and no heavy bone there. Just saying

Really Scott, I figured you weren't the kind to get defensive.

In fall/winter I prefer the front shoulder over a rump shot for that very reason yes. I find drug absorption rates are much better in the front shoulder. But since sometimes we have to take the target as offered that might mean a rump shot. I won't shoot at an animals front shoulder if another deer has their head above or below my target. So I might have to take a rump shot then also.

And by the way I didn't say I only use needles longer than 3/4", It depends on the intended target. Last I checked we dart young does, young bucks, and old and very large bodied animals.

It is a fluid world we live in.

I respect all input on this public board, and am grateful for the shared experience of all farmers and DVMs and other qualified professionals and non-professionals who chose to selflessly post here.

Having said this, I particularly respect the people who have come to my aid with respect to my animals with immediate and quick responses to me. Anytime you are in Chicago, ring me up please, drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) are on me! BTW, Roger, I don't know you, but I like your writing style very much.

Lanasvet

Very well put. You have a very giving and positive attitude. You also dont try to stir the s#!t between other members.

Scott and Roger both have given alot to the people of this site and I hope neither one chooses to quit posting.

My comments were supposed to be amusing, not confrontational. Heck there isn't anyone on this site that could intimidate me.....I don't have an ego!

Mark I know what your saying about the telazole my question to Scott what was his take on reversal IV with half the dose normally given IM . When I started farming I didn`t have the experience I could turn to so i needed to learn all I could because I had deer I needed to take care of so i took the safe capture course. After gaining experience on my own I did see that hands on will beat text book every time .

Hey Scott I wasn`t questioning your experience or knowledge. I just wanted to get your take on the half dose reversal IV Instead of IM with a normal dose ? I`ve only seen this one time and just wondered . Question Your experience ? I just wish i knew what you have forgotten . :) Remember Thelma Morgan ? In the old days that was the one to call when I couldn`t figure out what was going on .

Tom,

I used to have a vet that would give the full dose of Tolazine IV. I absolutely hated it. In my opinion they would come around way to quickly, and would be very high strung for several days. Reversal in the muscle is much better way to go.

Hey Mitch - Hope you didn't think I was telling you that you weren't wise to take a ''safe capture'' course. If you were not in the know, you were putting your best foot forward and that's wisdom and caring. And I hope you or somebody else didn't think I was trying to say that ALL safe capture courses aren't worth attending, even though the one I went to sucked!! What I was trying to highlight was the importance of this forum and the individuals that take time out of their day to help others. The Best to you Mitch!

Hey Mark, no i didn`t take it that way at all. After years of experience and lessons learned the hard way i`ve found out that there Is no better teacher than experience . Your so very right about the forums because this is where I found Thelma Morgan for some very good advise on health Issues . Have a Happy and safe Holidays Mark .

I will throw into the reversal question discussion. We normally inject Tolazine IM, but have done 1/2 IM and 1/2 IV. I'm not saying this is right, but it's what we do, and I have seen almost no problems doing it this way. Also, to the original question: if you don't get good results with your initial dart, don't bother re-darting with just Xylazine; I believe it will give sub-standard results more often than not based on the few times we have tried it. Pony up for another round of cocktail.
