I have noticed that a lot of people use SCI scoring instead of B&C. I was wondering if there are any distinct differences and why the preference seems to be SCI. If any of you could educate me on this it would be greatly appreciated.

I ask because the only system I have ever used is Boone and Crockett and am curious about the distinctions.

SCI has no deductions if they grew it you score it.Even if a tine is broken off you can ad it to the score as long as you can prove it came from the rack.

The reason behind using the SCI measuring system is simple. They don't hate us! SCI has been a supporter of High Fenced Hunting and a huge asset to our industry. B&C is none of these things. It's a shame that they do not support us (B&C) as we have the same message...getting people into the outdoors and returning to our founding, conservation, education etc.

Josh couldn't have said it better. I to am more familiar with B&C. We have switched all our scoring to SCI just because of their strong support. There are differences to get up to speed on and all this info can be found online if you goggle SCI scoring system.

I appreciate all of the information guys, I was just a little confused as to the preference. Is it safe to assume that the principles are the same, except for the deductions? And when do you score them? Just after they come out of velvet or what is your preference?

I thought there was a little difference with where tines "start" as far as the main beam is concerned?

For instance a really palmated rack suck as X-Factor...some tines may look only 3 or 4" long but due to the SCI method he gets much more credit say 6-7", almost like measuring from the tip of the antler to the middle of the beam.

This seems to be within the scope of this subject, well, barely. Volumes have been posted on this site about typical/non typical and the score ultimately dictates profit on our preserve hunts. Laying all of this aside, does it make any sense at all that some hunters want to keep the score under book score for anonymity purposes? That is, so that they could concoct their own story behind the hunt and not being suspicious as to never enter their deer for record scoring which would embarrass them?

Maybe I'm not reading your question right. Just because a buck is big enough to get entered into a record book doesn't mean you are required to enter it. I've never heard of some one passing a buck because he would make a record book, a buck maybe too big for the persons checkbook would be the only reason. The last thing I want to do if I kill a true Boone & Crockett buck is have it published in a book so everyone else could know where I hunt, makes no sense to me.

I do understand your response. I was asking "does anyone think a hunter or two might not want taking a buck (preserve hunt) in the book status because they concoct their own hunting story" and would not have to explain to their friends why they never had their trophy scored if it didn't qualify in the first place. The question was intended as a humorous anecdote.
