The buck on the right has an abcess on his chest that has broken open twice. Each time after breaking open the size has gotten smaller and then within about aweek it will start to get bigger again. After it popped the second time I darted with 3cc of Draxxin. I know that its not the ideal antibiotic for an abcess but thought that it couldnt hurt. That was seven days ago and it appears that it is starting to get bigger again. I really didnt want to knock him down to treat it but it now appears to me that i will have to. Do you think that if i let it go that it will eventually take care of it itself or not.

Personally if your not aware of any obvious reason for it such as a foreign object that needs to be removed, I am not sure I would mess with it as long as he is active and eating and drinking. One of the really old timers told me to not lance abcesses unless there is a really really good cause to. He said it is better to let them pop open and drain on their own. Less chance of infection he says.
I think i comes down to is the animal eating, drinking and active. You tried the Draxxin which I think was a solid effort. The only other thing might be some Banamine also to help with discomfort.

He is eating and drinking fine and acts normal he doesn't show any side affects. It just has me concerned that it keeps coming back.
What did you ever do with this buck and how did it turn out....we have one with that exact type of hole at the bottom of brisket right now.

Not of much help here but I had one like that for three years. Each time in fall I would sedate him and get about 1/2 coffee can full of green pus. I'm sure it was a foreign object causing it. When he died we did check out his chest cavity. Most of the lungs and liver were attached to the body cavity but we found nothing else to cause the problem. I was sure the puss was coming from inside the chest area and filled the lower brisket. I think I should have kept on draining the brisket more often. Best to put down, in the long run it would have saved me money. If I won't eat it I don't expect anyone else to.
Thanks for the input jack! I will do everything in my power to help this buck, not a chance he will be put down unless hes in agonizing pain, its just not how I roll.... Has anyone ever tried stitching an open wound like this on the brisket shut with maybe a drain tube in place or something?

I think you right to put in a drain tube so it all can get out. I would use Draxxin or Nuflor on it. As Draxxin last much longer I guess I would go with that.
My guy never showed pain but when it was up in the lung area it just got out of hand and he died. I would have tried the drain tube if I would have thought about it. Good idea. Guess fly's would be the only problem this time of year. Maybe try later in fall.

Thanks again jack! We were thinking maybe dart him with draxxin or excede (I know thickness and quantity may be against us on excede, but I believe it could be done?) Once or twice and keep an eye on it til we take him down to cut off antlers then be ready to cut away dead tissue stitch him up and put in drain tube...he is a breeder for us, so I want to desperately help him. I just didnt know if this type of thing will take him down overnight or if we could buy him and us some time and not do it when its 95 out!

We got aome antibiotics in him. We will keep an eye ln it and see what it does over the next few days and weeks....biggest concern is flies at this point I believe.....we put down huge straw beds and believe it or not he uses every one of them....and we are going to soad them with a pour on...see if it transfers and may help.thanks to all who have replied and anyone who has any additional info please let us know.
