Hey Jack, Not looking for a fight but everything I've seen on deer milk list the protein at 8.2% and the fat at 7.7%. That's alot closer to the cow, goat, horse, and most other animals I've checked on. The 29% of fat content in the replacers is the dry content before mixing it with water. After mixing it is 8.6% We had this disscussion on another thread with John Swank and he helped clear up the dry vs. wet %. Rick
Rick, that is the way I understand dry matter vs. wet matter basis. Keep in mind though, you can fluctuate the nutritional content of the milk replacers by the amount of water you add to the mix. Not all milk replacers when mixed will be exactly 8.6% protein. Just thought I would clear that up since I kind of got drug into this topic, again...
For those of you that would like to know the average percent composition of milks of several species of ruminants, I'll post some of the data provided by Helenette Silver, which is available in the Journal of Wildlife Management, Vol 25, No 1. pp 67 - with the study being in regards to Deer Milk Compared with Substitute Milk for Fawns.
Species ---- %Water ---- Protein --- Fat --- Sugar --- Ash
Cow --------- 86.21 ------- 3.77 ----- 4.45 -- 4.86 ---- 0.72 Raw Milk
Cow --------- 87.90 ------- 3.13 ----- 3.65 -- 4.50 ---- 0.72 Whole Milk (red cap)
Goat ---------87.14 ------- 3.71 ----- 4.09 -- 4.20 ---- 0.78
Sheep ------- 82.90 ------- 5.44 ----- 6.24 -- 4.29 ---- 0.85
Reindeer----- 63.30 ------- 10.30 ----19.73 -- 2.50 ---- 1.44
Deer -------- 67.77 ------- 11.92 ----15.06 -- 3.75 ---- 1.51 This study (from live deer)
Deer -------- 66.51 ------- 11.50 ---- 18.00 - 2.22 ---- 1.77 This study (from dead deer)
Evap milk --- 73.80 -------- 7.0 ------ 7.9 --- 9.8 ------ 1.5
Hope this information was helpful.
Has anybody ever tried undiluted evaporated milk?
Good luck,
John
