Hello:

I sedated eight buck and one doesn't seem to be coming around. All received the same dose of sedative and reversal. The rest were up and at em shortly after reversal was administered. This guy is blinking, moving ears but won't get up....if I walk up to him he wil raise his head and try to get up. Should I administer more reversal? If so how much? Its been 4 1/2 hours since he was darted.

Help is greatly appreciated!

That seems to be a heavy dose for 185 lbs regadless of the mix. Do not administer more reversal! The reversal only works on the xylazine. If he is aware the sedative, telazol, has been reversed. The problem is too much zylazine and can not be reversed. The main problem to watch for is bloat so try to get him in a prone position.

Yes it was a high dose...i had to administer more than the original amount cuz he wouldn't go out and I already had several others on the ground. I just came back up and he is up. The other deer seemed to get him stimulated. What are signs of bloat? He was laying in a bad position but I don't know for how long.

Thanks so much!

When you say he wouldn't got out??? How many times did you dart him?

What is the Total Meds in him.

Did he run alot before going down?

How Stressed was he?

Did you leave him down with bucks with antlers in with him?

If he is up he will take care of the bloat. Bloat is a build up of gas in the gut. He will look just like one that has been dead for a couple hours, swollen stomach. Since he is up just watch for pnuemonia for several days.

Painted,

I darted him with 2cc and then administered 1 additional cc by 1/4cc injections in intervals over time. He was in a pen with other buck with antlers but they didn't bother him cuz I was right there. And he was very calm when I initially darted him. He just didn't react like all the others when it came time for reversal. The purpose of darting was to remove antlers.

Deer chaser:

All the other bucks are antlerless. I am sitting with him but its pitch black out. What are some signs to watch for as far as pneumonia? Is he more susceptable because he was out longer?

Thanks again for all your help.

The problem is yhe amount of xylazine given, not the telazol. Xylazine has to be metabolized to ware off and it last a long time. Next time, if he is woblling after the first shot just add some telazol and water.

If he is not his normal self over the next sevearl days it is likely fever from pnuemonia. If he was mine, I would give him 3 cc of draxin in the muscle today or tomorrow.

after the first darting did he get stressed or no?

I am trying to decide between Stress/capture myopathy or lack of Oxygen from bloat.

Are his ears down, does he act drunk, muscle problems.... or is he fine now?

LOL...Thanks I'm not so sure about that but thanks...

There are several problems call if you want...it is easier.(724)735-9924

How long after the The last telazol was he reversed??

Billiejo:

No, he was not stressed after first darting....at least he showed little signs. He was clearly coherent though...eyes blinking etc. seemed fine after he got to his feet other than a tad wobbly. He was grazing on grass etc. did not appear drunk and his ears were up. He was aware if his surroundings. one hour after last injection of telozal. I have ben going over everything in my mind and I spoke to guys helping me and they drove the mule past him after I reversed. They said his head was up and he spoked a little and sort of turned our flipped himself from being supine to left side to flat on his right side. That's were he stayed flat as a board. He was breathing ok and would blink his eyes and move his ears but physically flay like a board.

Thanks to you and to deerchaser for all the quick help!

Most likely he is getting a rebound effect from the staggered doses of telazol. Xylazine is reversable, but telazol has to be metabolized before it becomes ineffective. I would wait 2 hours after the last 1/4cc topping and then use 3cc tolazine IV. For future reference, ketramine is a much better topping sedative as opposed to more telazol.

I am concerned about the other deer in the pen. He was wobbly and yhe other buck were chasing one another. No antlers but if he is still recovering they can run him down and cause injury.

What type of Xylazine did you use to mix it with ? 100 strength or 333 strength and how many cc's did you put in each Telazol bottle? I use 6 cc of 333 strength of Xylazine per Telazol bottle. Some put 5cc others 4cc . 6cc works good for me...I recently darted 60 bucks and sawed thier horns.I darted each of them with 1.25 mixed on a 1 1/2cc dart, and reverse them with 2cc of Tolazine. I did have like 2 bucks take like 2 hours to wake up.....but they got up .
