I know this is usually a secret to all the guys that collect urine, but I am wanting to know what preservetive and where you get it that you put in your urine to make it keep longer. I am looking into just collecting enough to use for me and my family and possiblly my friends if i get it to work.

Hi Jared,

I do this also for friends and family and from experience I think that if you collect it and get it into a freezer right away you don't need a preservative. Just thaw it before use and try to use it up within a week. One other thing that I do is not mixing urine from several deer. I am not sure if it makes a big difference but that is just the way I have always done it and believe me it really gets the wild deer curious.

Have you ever used that mucos that comes out of them when you're AIing? I've hear that stuff works great too. I'm thinkinig of collecting some this year. If anyone has ever used it let me know.

Steve,

Back, many many years ago, researchers in cattle trained dogs to detect "estrus (heat) related odors". These were some of the first steps to attempt to identify and maybe some day test for this odor. Trained dogs were able to detect the odor in urine, feces, milk, blood, tissue (meat), saliva, and other sources, but they were not able to detect it in ******l mucus. This does not mean that we should start using venision steak from estrus deer as an attractant, as other components of the sample may spook deer, but it does raise the issue that urine and feces may be more benificial than mucus.

Thanks for the info doc. I had a guy tell me to use it, but I've never heard of anyone trying it so I figured I'd ask. There's enough going on anyways while we're AIing, I don't need to be having to try and collect mucos too :D

I have people trying to knock me over to get drops of the stuff, while I am dealing with semen worth thousands of dollars. But you are as well off with feces or urine, can try collecting it on something with a neutral odor like sawdust or shavings in the holding area.

Part of the reason that the deer industry has to put up with me is my families long term raising of deer. I have had an interest and had done business in urine for a long time. I can still remember 35 years ago when a neighbor came over and placed a couple of burlap bags on the ground in a shed that our fallow herd used. He returned several months later and "dug" them from under the feces and urine and put them in a garbage bag and took them to Kentucky for hunting season. He claimed that he dragged them for a long distance over deer trails, and placed the gunney sacks on some bushes near a deer stand. He also claimed that they shot several inquizative deer smelling the burlap bags.

i used the mucus last year mixed with fresh urine and had some young bucks curious but had a couple of older mature bucks snort and run away after smelling it.

I have a covered ran way my bucks like to lay in.

You walk in there and you can smell them. going to put my camo in there.

see how that works. going to take to the stand in a bag,so they dont run me down:eek:

Jarod,

from what I have learned and understand over the years is a pinch of salt in the urine will help keep it fresh. How much to be exact is unknown to me. If 2riv has put it in the freezer and it works for him, that is good. I personally understand that the freezer will make the urine separate and break down much faster than normal after it is thawed. He did say use it fast.

We had a raccoon problem last year. We couldn't put out leghold traps because of our cats, so we put out cage traps. W ended up catching several ****. We disposed of all of them, except we caught a couple very young *****. We felt bad and couldn't put them down. So, we put them in an old rabbit hutch. My son started rigging a way to catch their urine. We thought it would be a nice cover scent for hunting as well as trapping. We ended up catching about a half gallon of **** pee. About a teaspoon of salt was added (we just guessed) and the urine was fresh all year. We did keep it refridgerated.

Good luck!

how do you all go about collecting it. being that i am one of two or three deer farms in southern indiana i am looking to do this just to help bring in a few extra dollars since im pretty new and not quite in the green yet.

Well Ben without getting too crazy and building collection pens.......you need to have deer that are tame...and if they are laying down and you get them up you simply be ready cause they will usually pee within a few minutes after standing and you just hold the cup and let them do their thing......LOL......wear gloves!!

would anyone be willing to pm me or post on here how their scent collection pens are built im a contractor and starting deer farmer and would like to build on help would be greatly appreciated

We have very tame does and a buck that will let us walk up and hold our 2oz bottles we use as they pee works good for use and its very cheap bottles run 98 cents at walmart they are 2oz empty spray bottles in the pharmacy area

I would not use expanded metal as it will chew up the hooves and rust over a very short time or the rubberized coating or floor paint and even some plastics because all will leach odors into the urine and contaminate it making it a very low quality and ineffective.

The average buck can smell you about a ½ mile away so he can also detect these other odors making it less effective.

I am presently drawing up a set of plans and instructions on how to build urine collection stall.

It may take me a few days as the drawing take awhile to do.

Wyane,

It's awesome to draw up a collection stall as long as it is respectful to the animal that will be collected.....in my opinion that is impossible....but maybe you have a good idea.....I just don't know how the animal can be free ranging and still be able to be collected unless tame and able to walk up behind it and collect it freely as it goes........I honestly feel we need to respect our Whitetails that we choose to raise and as long as we do it respectfully it's awesome..........I'm not saying anything against you Wyane...I just don't know how you create a stall unless it is where they come up to feed or drink.....that would be respectful to the animal that is used to free range.....just my opinion.....
