We are selling a very few straws of sexed semen from our buck Blue River. Blue River scores 282 at two years old. These straws were drawn by Earl Souva and sexed in Texas. We have both male and female sexed straws.

Please contact us if you are interested in these.

Have you used Sexed semen in deer before, and what are your percentages?

I know a few months back we all had a great discussion about sexed semen, and I was wondering if it was working.

I am not even trying to say this wont work, so you all please leave this as a question not an insult!

We have not used it yet but are planning to this fall. We typically have 75% success rate with our AI program. We are doing a lot of deer each fall, not just 10 - 15. With that in mind, we are planning to do a quantity of does with sexed semen to see if the research is correct. We've been told that with male semen we should expect 9 out of 10 offspring to be male. The same with does. This is our first opportunity to use the sexed semen so we will see if that holds true.

We will be drawing semen this week and having it sexed as well. We plan on trying to AI about 50-60 doe with male semen in December. Will know the results in June!

Maybe a stupid question but, how much more does it cost to have semen sexed over the initial draw cost? Sounds interesting to me. I will also be interested in hearing how the results turn out.

Thanks

Mark, We were considering doing that with Updraft's collection this year but then didn't. We were told $5,000 per buck this year for the service.

If we are able to choose all buck fawns what will happen to the shooter market then. Just a thought.

If you are wondering what will happen to the shooter market it will tumble

big time. Look at dairy prices, they have been using sexed semen for approx-

matly 3 yrs, Milk prices are around 11.50 per hundred. Dairy heifers are at

rock bottom prices. Dairy farmers breed for heifers (does) for herd replacement and

more milk production. Last year milk prices where 20.00-22.50 per hundred.

Dairy farmers need 14.00 to break even . We don't need this in the deer

industry. TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT A INDUSTRY THAT HAS BEEN DOING THIS.

I wonder if semen buyers are aware that sexed semen is currently thought to only be good for Lap A/I and not cervical?

That is one reason we wanted to wait before having Updraft semen sexed. We didn't want to force the buyers to use Lap A/I if they don't use that method now.

I am very interested to see how the results come back on the use of sexed semen in cervical A/I. I can see us doing sexed semen on our next collection of Updraft most likely now that we have "conventional" semen in the tank.

Thanks for the answers WR. It will be interesting to see how it goes this spring. Please keep us updated.

Our main reasoning for sexing semen is to be able to carry fewer does to produce bucks for our hunting program. If we can get by with 25% less does and still produce to same amount of shooter bucks for our own operation it will cut cost for us. There is still alot to be learned in the success of sexing whitetail semen.

Ross, if everyone thinks that way then we shouldn't have a problem. Using sexed semen as a way of cutting down the numbers of does is a great cost savings. The issue comes when people keep the same numbers of does and produce that many more bucks. Very rough numbers I figure about 30% to 40% more bucks would be produced across the country.

I am still a little skeptical on what the success will be with the AI'ing of the sexed semen. We are going to draw on two bucks and freeze those straws and then draw for fresh semen before we AI. Luckily the sexing place is right across the highway from us, but is still going to cost $5,000 per buck.

We are not going to be doing lap AI - but will do it in the chute. We have experimented previously with this sperm count and extender and could see no difference in our conception rate.

Since we have a hunting ranch the more bucks we can produce with fewer does will make a difference in our overhead. We do not purchase shooters - so we won't be affecting the market at all.

I think this could hurt us bad. The industry is bad enough already. If the ranches can have all bucks then they don't need to buy any. What about the female semen. are you going to throw those straws away because nobody will need more does they will need less. What do you do with the excess does now? We need a solution to fix the deer market now not make it worse

I'm not sure how I feel about sexed semen or ET? Part of me thinks it's great and part of me thinks it only hurts the industry as a whole....

Well, a lot of people weren't sure about AI at first either thinking it would hurt the industry. I think it just changed it. Nothing stays the same forever and all industries keep changing - which is what sexed semen will do. Not everyone is going to do it, at least not for a long time until the price comes way down. You have to have a buck you think it is worth doing it with also. We chose Blue River because he is the biggest two year old we've ever had.

We'll see if we get the results that were advertised - if we do you can bet we'll be doing more next year.

One thing is for sure, I like hearing about the results from a project like you guys do up there. You don't do small numbers of does each year so your results mean more than if you were doing only a few does each year.

And you run these "tests" in multiple pens as well. That gives you more than one test subject to assess.

I really am interested in hearing what your results will be doing the cervical a/i with sexed semen.

I see a watered-down shooter market coming in the near future.:( Everyone defends the choice by saying it affects the bottom line. Unfortunately everyone has a bottom line and not everyone can afford to go that route. I can't say I blame the choice b/c if I had a 50 head capacity and could afford AI you can bet I would have approx. 85% bucks on the farm too.;)

I agree with previous post. I too have mixed feelings about this.

For me sexed semen is just wrong !!! ....................... I love the suspense of going in my doe pens at fawning time and feeling like a kid at christmas wondering if its a one holer or a two holer!!!!!!!! When i lose that part of it i think it will be time for me to move on.I am all for progress..................But at what cost!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For me a fast buck is not worth possibly hurting a business i love.........Bottom line yeah.... but check the experation date first!!!!!!!!!!!!!MIGHT be the "straw" that breaks our broken backs!
