We have a one week old fawn that has had a leg amputated because of a compound fracture.  She is now lethargic and has a little rasp on exhale.  she has not been eating very well.  She takes less than half what she should be eating.  Vet said to give her penicillin or the amputation.  She was on her mother until after the operation.  So we had to try to get her started on the bottle.  But now she's going down hill.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot to add some things.  We have given her today 1/10 cc Draxin and 2/10 cc vit B Complex.  She seems a little more alert now but still is not breathing right.  She is not my fawn and am doing someone else a favor by trying to get her onto a bottle.  When it's someone else's fawn you feel so much more responsible.

Also, a Thank you to all the Vets. out there that gave up so much for our freedoms.

I personally would use Nuflor instead of Draxxin, it has worked better for me. Tube her if you have to, get some nutrients in her as quickly as possible. When they don't feel good they are hard to start on a bottle. Patience, patience, patience. Good luck.....

Your vet was right about using penicillin. Use regular long lasting penicillin not draxxon. A compound fracture would have healed itself. Next time let nature do the healing you will be surprised. I have seen many with bones hanging out that we rapped and healed fine. Some that were under skin we just left alone and were fine.

I like nuflor/tetradure in combination

personally I would give it 2cc cd antitoxin sq daily for 3-4 days until she starts eating better

you can give a little b12 too

front or back leg??

It's been my experience the Nuflor works better faster than Draxxin which works longer on the respiratory problem. The tetradure(tetracycline) will help fight infection better at the surgery sight. It is necessary to give 3shots over a ten day period when treating with Nuflor. I have been using Resflor in place of Nuflor. It is a 50/50 blend of Nuflor Gold and banimine. I agree with dtala tube her till she starts taking the bottle. The drugs will probably kill the fawn if it's not hydrated.

I agree with Sandy. Thank you very much today to all our Vets for keeping us free!!!

Thank you all for replying.  Unfortunately we lost her this afternoon.  It was my understanding that the vet decided to amputate because the leg was already infected.  She was tough little girl and had actually had taken to the bottle pretty good yesterday.  I May give Nuflor another chance, did not have good luck with it a couple of years ago.  Thank again.

The biggest thing when you lose one is to try to examine the situation and try to determine if a person could have done things different to save the next one with the same or similar problem.  Tears your heart out to lose any of them.
