Good morning. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. My two dogs were sprayed last night by skunks. They are golden labs. I gave each of them two baths with Dawn dish soap, baking soda and peroxide and then one with dog shampoo. Any other suggestions? They do smell better, but they still have an odor to them. Should I shave around then neck area?

You need an enzyme solution that actually "eats" the bad smelling bacteria away. It will not harm the dogs at all, soap and shampoo only mask the odor. I think Petsmart or somewhere like that will have it. I used some direct from a manufacturer that my buddy had and it was awesome.

Shelly - Our Lab got sprayed a few years ago.

We've all heard the ''tomato juice'' remedy...it does NOT work!!!

And we used a specifically designed skunk odor remover in a bottle...it did NOT work. Wished I could remember the name, but can't.

My wife, Marsha, mixed a solution as follows:

1 huge bottle of peroxide

1/4 cup baking soda

2 tablespoons of dish soap

NO WATER

Rub this solution into the hair, and leave on for 15 minutes.

Marsha repeated this 5 times in 5 hours and completely eliminated the smell.

You'll aptly need someone else to do the 'smell check' Shelly, because if your doing the cleaning, the up close and personal stuff with your dogs, the skunk odor will likely permeate your nostrils and you'll not be able to detect the absence of the odor like someone else will be able to.

Marsha also used it on our carpet, because when Jedi came in the house after getting sprayed, first thing he did was do an ''otter slide'' all over the carpet. It worked great on the carpet

Ok, let me clarify. Marsha had to do this task instead of me only because I was on my way out the door to do something very important, and I had people waiting on me...I was going on a hunting trip...:) It was one of the best timed trips I have ever been part of! WHEW did that dog stink!!! lol

Funny thing is now, when me and Jedi are going down the road and he smells a road kill skunk, he immediately begins to roll around on the seat, believing I guess that he just got sprayed again. I am relatively sure he has learned his lesson...hope your dogs have learned as well Shelly.

Sounds like what Todd used would be the ticket, cause like I said, Marsha had to use this other solution repeatedly, but it did work ultimately.

Hope the best for YOU Shelly and your poor dogs! :)

if you have a black dog it'll be brown after using that..BUT...it does work...TIME is the only thing that really takes the stench away...my dog used to kill skunks. dumb dog

Thanks everyone for the advise. I used the peroxide, baking soda and Dawn soap and I believe we have gotten rid of the smell. I am now an official skunk catcher. Caught the momma in a live trap this morning and had 3 of her babies running around the cage. Once the babies left I took a tarp (the husband had to go to work "with a big smile on his face" so it was left to me) and placed this over the cage. Got a huge bucket, filled this with water and put the trap in it. Shelly - 1, Momma skunk - 0. Now keep in mind that this live trap is open on all sides!! Anyway, I am going to rent a skunk trap from a guy who lives here in town and hopefully will be rid of the critters within the next week or so.

Rick - WHAT??? Marsha put this solution on him 5 times in 5 hours, left it on him for 20 minutes, which was 10 minutes past the recommended time to leave on...and my dog Jedi is black...there wasn't ANY of him that turned brown...not one hair! Just clarifying and sharing our experience...

So I thought I would be smart and rent a trap for skunks to catch the remaining 5 or 6 skunks that are living in my neighbors yard. This is the second morning that I woke with no results. I wonder if they were spooked and moved on or just got smart. I put dog food and jelly in the trap. What do you all think?

Sardines always worked best for me!

Yep, sardines, fish heads from the fish market, maybe even just some meat scraps from the table...all that should work...and a skosh of patience

Mark....turned my black dog turned brown in spots...of course she REEKED so i MAY have left it on her a bit long lol. Crazy dog...she never did learn to leave skunks alone...she just HAD to kill them

Rick - Wouldn't be such a bad thing I guess...turning their coat brown. Although I have 2 black labs, I've always been a bit partial to the ''chocolate'', lol.

My lab, as I said before, since he got sprayed, rolls on the truck seat now when he smells a road kill skunk, thinking that he himself got sprayed.

On another occasion, while mushroom hunting with my Lab, again since he had gotten sprayed, he came back to me and started rubbing his face and shoulders on the ground.

About that time I began to smell skunk, and I said ''No you didn't!!''

And no he didn't, there was no skunk smell on him...he just thought he got sprayed.

So, I'm assuming he has learned his lesson, but nothing short of seeing him around a skunk will I ever know for sure. If he hasn't learned his lesson, and gets sprayed again...I'll be quickly arranging a hunting trip, and be quickly booking out the door again...lol

Oh oh, I smell skunk...
