For those of you who feed your deer snacks, what do you give them?

We stopped and visited a farm this weekend. When they took us out to see their deer, the wife had a bag of "treats". They were giving them chunks of watermelon rhines. Never tried this, but their deer liked it.

She also told me they love banana peels........this I would NEVER have given it a thought to try. Took one out and offered it to our doe, and she didn't hesitate, took it, and ate it right down, and was looking for more.

So I thought maybe there's some other great ideas for snacks that my deer might be missing out on.

Marshmellows, peanuts and bread are just some of the few that I know of. They love pumpkins...never heard of watermelon rind, but makes sense. Banana peels...would have never thought of.

My boss' neighbors would bring over apples when they had some in their fridge and our does would come running right up whenever they came up to the fence with them... most of the time if we want to give them somethingso we can get them close enough to get a good look at, all we have to do is put a scoop of corn out and they'll all come up and start munching on it...we had a bottle-raised super tame buck a couple years ago, no matter where he was in the 30 acres of woods, if he heard the corn clanging around in the scoop (or gravel if we were out of corn...lol), he'd immediately make his way up to us. He LOOOOOOVED his corn.

My friend's mom said she always had good luck with girl scout cookies too...never thought of that one...

We usually use peanuts and branches we pull of trees outside the the pen. They've eaten all the leaves within reach inside the pen, so they love those.

Every year we have woodvine that grows up around trees. This stuff grows very fast and you can break the new growth off easily from the original vine which you could probably climb the tree with. The leaves are huge and it is a very good calling card. I have used watermelon rines and it works well. I have three crops of buttercup squash planted for later in the year that I know they will love. They are small and sweet and easier to deal with than pumpkins.

I tried all so far listed ,my deer also love stawberries and peaches and soft pretzels.

p.s. I get left overs from a farmers market and a soft pretzel store

I give them a little sip of Bud Select. It has a benefit. It helps put hair on there chest. I will say this, my neighbor gives his deer Natural light the only problem with that is they wind up with scours.:D

Mine love apples, grape vines, dandilion greens, clover (hand picked of course) triscuts, cheerios and animal crackers no matter how wrong it is. By the way do vegetarians eat animal crackers???

Just delivered two watermelons for bottle feds. My 9 year old daughter loves to give treats,

Scott

My girls LOVE: pears, apples, carrots, watermelon, bananas, vanilla wafers (the dollar-store brand - they are REALLY good and cheap), grapes, and when they get a really sweet strawberry they grunt (too cute!).

Let's continue: bread/bagels/muffins -they love toast w/ strawberry jam, dry cereal (Special K w/ red berries is their favorite), pecans, almonds, and cooked maple syrup oatmeal (they get a little, not a whole bowl). They also love banana pops!!

They eat better than me!

Gail-

LOL, I guess you're right Scott!! When they come inside and I walk over to the fridge, Nina runs me over so she can get her head in there. It's hilarious! Nina is my fat girl - she really is....She LOVES to eat - she has been that way since she was a fawn. Took down a bottle faster than you could blink! Faline, bless her heart, she eats in moderation therefore, does not get the same amount of treats as Nina - she is my skinny girl.

I forgot a few things :) They also eat celery, lettuce, and cucumbers.

I buy bread from the bakery outlet store that is out of date. You get bread or buns and about 15 bags in a large bag is $3.50. I clap my hands and this is the signal for bread and the whole bunch comes running fast. Visitors marvel to see big bucks come running to the clapping of hands. The bread is easy to handle , no sticky hands, and lasts pretty good if kept out of the sun. I break some bread up in small pieces and then squeeze them back into a soft ball size and throw it.....I call it a bread grenade....when it hits the ground it explodes into the bits and many can eat at the same time. Also , with the clapping of hands , I can get the whole bunch , around thirty, up for a close examination of antlers, injuries ,health concerns ,darting, ect. without chasing or binoculars. Most eat out of our hands and the mothers bring the fawns up when they are old enough and they tame down to us and other people fast....another real plus with handling deer. Jim
