I've kicked around the idea of using sexed semen on a few doe this coming year. My question is this. Considering the cost of having the semen sexed and all the things that could go wrong. Is it worth it or not? I know several of my fellow deer farmers have already been here and done it so, if any of you all would plz give me your personal opinion I would really appreciate it!

I had two does i bought this year that were aid to male sexed i hope to try 50 percent of my does this year to sexed

I hear people who used it are having TERRIBLE conception rates   Lots of singles and wondering if it is worth doing!  Maybe I should try it myself so I know first hand!  Maybe not!  JIM

I have heard both good and bad. This year I heard of 2/10 taking and then also heard a 9/10. Lots of factors it seems and some of the guys had trips from it.

I am with Ryan.  I have heard some success and some not so good.  I purchased a couple of does last year that were LAP AI (not at my farm) and neither took.  Lots of factors that can affect the outcome...quality of the semen, how the deer are handled before and leading up to the AI.  I had one with Triplets and one with a single.  The single was 10 yrs old....direct maxbo daughter, on her way down possibly...wouldn't be surprised if that had something to do with it.

I bought 2 high end bred sexed semen does from the same breeder as rsanders32 and neither one took . In fact it looks like they may have been missed by the live bred back up. They are very small 2 year old does and very lean.

First year I got a single from a yearling doe.  Second year 1 of 2 took giving me twins. This year my LAP wasn't good at all so I disregard the fail this year.

We bred two with male sexed semen this year.  Both took.  One had a single huge buck fawn.  The other had a DOE fawn!

Crunch the numbers based on 60% average conception after sexing semen and using it. It is a bad idea. You are better off from an economical standpoint pasture breeding and getting a 50/50 *** ratio. The only time it makes sense to AI is about every other year in order to outcross and introduce new blood.

First year doing it... Did lap ai and 7 of 11 does took... Got 14 bucks and one doe out of seven mom's.. Four sets of trips and three singles...you do the math...i will do it again forever... And I got 165 straws male of the dad if anybody wants some... He's huge and pedigree is undeniable as well as ai results.message me I will be happy to send pics, pricing, pedigrees..up to u.. I make shooters... Shooters make money

1 $200 per head average lap AI cost

2 Travel expenses for AI tech $500

3 three bam kits $900

4 Upkeep per year on all 11 does @ $400 per head. $4400

5 Cost to collect the brood buck $1500

6 Fee to *** semen ? $2500

7 Lost time synchronizing does-? cost

8 Increased mortality risk of handling the does 3 times and aspirating during the procedure

9 how many collections are poor quality and can't be sorted also a potential loss of income.

10 EHD loss and risk associated with collecting a buck

I will keep the $10,000.00 in my pocket and watch my healthy bucks breed. It's kind of exciting lifting a new born fawns leg and checking its ***. I need my doe fawn too. I will gladly take 11 buck fawns and 11 doe fawns and the peace.

12 Pasture bred does.....from 2 Sires.................15 Bucks and 6 Doe fawns and 3 more Does left to Fawn...................I'll take that ANYDAY!

LAP AI'd 10 does to sexed semen. Used 2 different bucks, 5 straws each. 2 out of 10 does stuck. 1 out of each buck. Long story short, the semen was bad. Motility ranged from 30%-10%. I wish my AI guy would have told me at the time of breeding so I could have used different stuff. Live and learn.

I have a friend who stuck just 2 out of 20 and lost one doe. Several of the doe that missed to the the Lap AI then didn't breed until the 3rd cycle or not at all.

Why do breeders allow terrible quality semen to leave their farm?

I have had breeders show good motility reports from semen collections. After thawing and examining multiple straws under a microscope you wonder if your straws came from a different collection or were irregularly packed. A couple of years ago we AI exclusively to one buck. We split the semen 3 ways based on statements made by the owner and a motility report. Only 1 doe out of 12 stuck. We have been AI ing for 11 year and have never had that poor of conception. I ask my friend Gerald Yoder if his does stuck to the same sire and none of his did either. The seller said if we had split the semen twice it would have been guaranteed. While selling the straws the owner said the semen was so good it could be split three ways. We learned an important lesson. It matters where you buy and who you buy from.

Seems everyone is different but I will say Jason at Phoenix Whitetails has had great success with his buck Cyclone.  The semen is high quality and produces twins and trips.  I'm live breeding this year to get some good outcrosses but the next time I AI, it will be with Cyclone.

Who did your lap?

I also plan to continue AIing every other year. The purpose will be to introduce new blood and take a look at heterosis. If sorted semen can be successfully used to AI in the squeeze chute, we will strongly consider that method. We plan to AI 40 does this fall in the chute.

From all the research I did before we used sexed semen this year I learned the difference between lap and conventional ai on sexed semen is lap gives better conception rates, more twins and trips(as I was told conventional has higher rate for singles), and you need 1.5 to 2 straws per doe conventional as opposed to one straw per doe for lap. I also had a buddy do his own with cyclone sexed conventional ai this year in his chute and got 75% conception with both twins and singles... He did use two straws per doe.
