We have a buck fawn that has a swollen foot. I noticed it about a week and a half ago. He won't put any pressure on it. It doesn't appear to be broken but more of a sprain issue. We gave him 2cc Draxin today. Its cold here in Missouri with snow and I don't really want to knock him down. He's not bottle fed but you can get within 5 feet of him and I don't see any cosmetic damage either. Any ideas?

We have had one deer each for the past three years have a problem 2 bucks and one doe always rut time...While chasing 2 of mine ran a stick up in between their hoof.

The other one, when we put it down found out it had an infection where the dart hit it a few weeks earlier and the infection settled in the hoof...

It is easy to treat if bottle raised but takes a long time and lots of antibiotics...If you can get hands on it you are better off...We soak it and drain it and keep antiseptic on it...When taken care of the it will either heal or push the hoof off and grow a new one.

BEST OF LUCK!

Hope it turns out for ya.

With injuries like this I give Dexasone (Dexamethasone). It will reduce swelling and discomfort. Can easily be used in a dart. I have had great luck with it. Just don't give it to any pregnant does as it will cause them to abort.

Gaylen took the words out of my mouth-Dex. If you could get this buck in the chute or possibly within "squirting distance" I'd also soak that foot with Coppertox.

I have sort of the same problem, but my buck has a cracked hoof. Last year I knocked him down and trimmed it up and he did fine until a few weeks ago. He is now limping. What do you guys do for this?
