If it was hard and no puss it is fuso infection in the bone and will be hard to cure but antibiotics are your answer.  Draxin would be a good choice because it lasts longer, one shot should last a week for sure.  Baytril is really to be done twice a day so is harder to work with.

If they are bottle fawns put the wormer in the milk.  We just did ours yesterday with Valbenzen and will reworm in ten days as this will get the first and second stage worms.  If they are on the moms you can use the wormer on the food but it is hard to get them all.  As fawns are slow to eat most will go into the does so is not a good way for them while on does.  Any of the injectable wormer like Ivermic will work.

Tammy, I'd treat with Draxxin, Baytril is not near as good as Draxxin is for this problem. You ought to be able to buy/get 3-4cc of Draxxin from a vet without buying a $250.00 bottle of it. Draxxin is the only thing I use for Fuso and it works.

Ok just saw this second page.

Our vet does not carry Draxxin so we will have to find it from another vet or order it.  What are your thoughts on Nuflor?  Also have you ever seen it spread to the legs.  The fawn we put down yesterday ended up with a swollen foot that we just thought she tweaked but then it abscessed and ruptured.  This morning one of my girls with swollen jaws is limping and it looks like her knee is swollen.  This fuso is a mess.  I have never seen it in the 8 years I've been rehabbing fawns.  This has taken a toll on us this year.

These are all bottle fed fawns.

I have been rehabbing fawns for 8 years and I have never seen this.  I am learning something new but at the cost of these babies.  I really appreciate you all taking the time to educate and share your wisdom.  People always ask me how I can do what I do and still be a hunter but it's not about making these babies pets it's just giving them a second chance to live.  I respect both ends of nature.

Dtala, what dose do you give?  They weigh about 10lbs.  I just found a vet I can pick some Nuflor up at.  No one has Draxin.

dosage is 6ml/100lbs

first dose I'd give it 1ml SQ(under the skin) between the shoulders on top. if you repeat, wait five days and give .6ml

The reaction was a bit shocking and my heart skipped a beat.  Thanks again for everyones help.  All I can do at this point is hope it works.

I do have another question though.  Has anyone ever seen it move into the leg of the deer too?  We did get a culture off so waiting on results of that.

Yes, fuso can be found almost anywhere in the body. Feet and mouth/jaw are the most common places. But I have had it cultured from the lungs and leg also. It is usually picked up by an open wound on the feet or mouth. Fuso is nasty stuff and can spread quickly. I waste no time in treating anything suspect.

Ok Nuflor must really burn.    Everyone got their first dose so let's hope it works.

sorry I left that part out!!!

I had one jump up, twitch and fall over like it was dead. Thought I had killed it. It was ok in a few minutes.

Ok morning update.  Gave my 10lb girls last night 1cc of Nuflor and the little boy .5cc.  this morning all swelling in Jaws are gone.  When giving them the meds last night they got all worked up because of the burn and I noticed I could hear fluid in one of the girls chest (so let's hope it clears that up too) the other one still has swelling in the knee area so hoping this helps clear everything up.

dtala - the two girls shook their head a bunch after injection but the little boy went all limp noodle and almost went into a fetal position.  I thought the same thing last night but they recovered after about 30 sec.

I am in tears thinking about the others we lost but I hope we are on the road to full recovery with these three.  Still waiting on culture to come back.

Soooooo....next question do I give a smaller dose no matter what in 3-5 days?

I'd give a smaller dose, maybe .5 and .25, in five days. Quitting early on antibiotics is bad juju. If the bacteria is not dead it will come back and be harder to kill. One thing about Nuflor is that is seems easy for a bacteria to develop an immunity to the drug. Draxxin is not as bad about this.

I would second dose. If I had one that I thought I heard fluid in, I would second dose sooner, than the rest. If I could still hear some thing after that I may try something else, nuflor has worked well for us in the past, but we had one this year that it didn't. This year Noromycin 300LA has worked, when nuflor hasn't, and we have noticed it clear up respiratory issues quickly, 3-5 hours later.

Tammy, just a FYI, have a bottle of Epinephrine handy any time you give anti-biotics. Rarely, a fawn will go into anaphylactic shock from an antibiotic shot and a quick shot of Eppi is the solution. Anaphylactic will kill a fawn in just minutes. Eppi is cheap...and cheap insurance. Tape a syringe/needle to the bottle for fast access.

Ok so it's been 48 hours since Nuflor dose and one girl looks like she is swelling in jaws again.  She is the one with the swilling in knee area too.  To me this looks like the fuss is there too.  Her whole upper leg to knee swelled up and now everything has moved to knee.  Looks like it may rupture.

So should I go ahead and give her a second dose tonight or wait until tomorrow which would be 72 hrs.

I will wait on the other two on second dose since they seem to be doing ok.  I will second dose them in a couple more days.

Oh and chest sounds so much better in the other girl too.

Thanks for that suggestion dtala on the Eppi.
