Ok. I'm like Wooden. I got an opinion. I remember going to McQuaigs farm about 13 years ago. David was talking about the deer as his retirement project. He told me that he was selling every buck fawn he wanted to for $1500.00. I told Tina on the way home that if I could sell every buck fawn for $1500.00, I would sell every one of them. I was so excited to think that I could actually make money doing this. Since I have been in this business, it seems everyone is always talking about how we are going to flop. It always just keeps going up. I guess you guys just dont get it. It aint about the DAMN money. People love deer. They love everything about deer. They dream about deer. They talk about deer all year round. They look at pictures of deer and read stories about deer, while they are sitting on the pot for gosh sakes. They hunt for deer antlers in the woods. They have deer antler knives, lamps, cabinet knobs, chandeliers, bed covers with deer on them, wine holders, ear rings, belt buckles, signs and paintings and every other conceivable thing known to man. Have you ever seen a picture of an Emu hanging in a house? Have you ever seen anyone dreaming about Emu's while they are on the pot. Have you ever seen anyone with a bunch of Emu's mounted and hanging on the wall. Its a business that is driven by passion. If you are passionate about the deer business, you will always make it. If you aren't passionate about the deer business, you probably need to find another line of work. You see when you talk about your own industry is going to tank, how many deer do you think people want to buy from you. Everyone just always needs to be positive. In reality, we all aren't going to get rich. Its not a scheme. So, its not a get rich quick scheme. If I can sell deer and guide hunts for a living, well, what more could I ask for. Living in the middle of the woods, with turkeys, squirrels, rabbits and all kinds of wildlife in the yard, a full belly and a ton of good friends. It just don't get no better. Good luck to all and never, and I mean never let anyone pee on your dreams!!!!!!!!!! After all, its your dream not theirs.

You nailed it Tim! There's nothing like a good dose of perspective to keep everyone on track.

Tim, your the man. Passion is what most of us have about deer. But for some it is just the money. Heck for me the money and the "business side" of the deer is what gets in my way. I love the genetics, and have always said if someone wanted to do the business side for me and let me just feed and breed the deer I would be really happy to do it.

I am recalling a statement I heard once.

"Whether or not you believe you will fail or succeed you are right."

Meaning you can dictate your own failure or success in life just by the way you are.

I always knew I would raise a big buck, and whalah. There he stands in my pen:D

Deer are soooo cool:cool::cool::cool:

My feelings are the people that want to run,should... because they only hurt what we are all so hard striving for...

Some put their blood, sweat, and tears into deer... others just put their wallets and nothing more.

I like what I've been reading here in the thread.....shows a lot of deer farmers are determined to make their dreams come true......we have a great industry here and it will have it's ups and downs just like any other.......don't let rumors and panic ruin your hopes and dreams.......this does not mean to not be wise and careful with your buying and selling....we all have to be on our toes and to watch the economy as well as the IDIOT that is sitting in the Whitehouse right now!! I believe our market is good but to think it can't be effected by a bad economy and to think we are not going to feel some effects fron the current economy is just not good business thinking........this year there will be a big drop in hunts being sold as people are holding on to their money and not doing the luxury type things they normally would do under a stable economy. This will have an effect for a few years as there will be a flood of shooter bucks available to the preserves resulting from the down turn in hunts being sold this year and possibly next year as well. I am also very concerned with the President and his band of Czars that are currently trying to turn our country into something its not.......How they will effect our Industry in the furture I do not know but am definetly concerned. Now with this all being said, I am not going to let any of this ruin something that I have dreamed of doing for many years and have spent lots of sweat, blood, tears and dollars to get it where it currently is..........I am going to hang in there not only because I LOVE raising the deer....but because I have full faith that our Industry will survive and flurish for many of years to come!! Hang in their guys and girls things will get better soon enough.....this is America and even though the president is doing his best to change that........I can already see (with the Health care he is trying to change) that we Americans are not going to let him change what we have stood for since the days of which this Country was founded!! Keep fighting.......keep faith .........and always have hope!

I wouldn't have been married for 26 years if i'd a hung it up everytime my wife had givin me a report like this on our checking and savings account! :D:D

Tim, VERY WELL SAID.... You should inspire everyone of us with your post. EAT, SLEEP, THINK and DREAM whitetails. That pretty much sums up my days. We are and will be raising what I feel is one of God's most beautiful creations for years to come. Breeders, shooters, preserves or pets they all have a place in my heart.

This industry is no different than any other industry. They all have there ups and downs. The down sides usually serve to weed out the nonserious people that get in for a quick buck. People will continue to hunt and as the economy picks up they will book pay hunts. Pay hunts are the cheapest way to go if you are looking for a quality buck. You can hunt forever on nonmamaged properties and not see a 160 inch deer. There are very few land owners left with enough property to raise good shooters. Their neighbors determine what is left each year and not much is left of any quality. People will not continue to be apart of a hunting club spending 1500.00 per year and never see good bucks. I believe that hunting in the general public has declined because of the lack of quality not lack of interest. They will come to the preserves to hunt sooner or later.

Are you trying to get a whole bunch of pissed off Texans beating down your door???? Trust me, there are plenty of "little guys" here that are not "old money" that are working just as hard as anyone else in the country to see a pay-off, trying to earn their blessings. And, as this sale just showed, the market is strong and that gives everyone, even the little guys, a chance to hit a home run. There is a lot of money everywhere, so don't get caught up in a stereotype - we don't all have oil rigs in our back yards and drive cadilac's with horns on the hood.....:)

It was a great weekend, and it was very exciting to be in the room and watch a deer sell for $460k - talk about energy filling a room! It motivated us, and I am sure others, because it gave us hope that we can grow a big deer and reap a big payoff. Maybe we can't go out and buy that type of deer, but we can work hard and hope to grow one, and there are people out there that can and will buy it.

Sorry, I would never want to offend any one, rich or poor. I think you may have misunder stood the depth of what I was trying to say. When God blesses something it is a blessing not a curse. In life every one is dealt a different hand. The men that spent $460,000 and others that were top bidders are an inspiration to me, you and others like us that any thing is possible. The fact I was trying to point out. With out these top buyers would this have been an encouraging sale. Would past sales throughout the country have been what they were with out Texas bidders?

Passion is the drive that keeps a person going in good times and bad. Passion is a positive out look and attitude that any thing is possible. I have known several deer farmers who have been raising deer for 15 to 30+ years who sold there deer due to sickness or old age. Most of them did not loose their passion. They lost their ability to care for the deer properly.

I remember one old man in his mid 80s who had deer forever. When the last of his deer were loaded on the trailer and he was handed the check. The old man had a tear in his eye. He never lost his passion.

Hey, tim condict excelent point there. I will just say my thoughts ,good or bad. The new people trying to get in the deer business ,usually have just heard how much the deer will bring or how much they are going to make. If you dont truly love the deer as tim commented, you dont have any thing to complain about, far as prices of the deer. Every body in world has to have a good business plan to succeed in any business.live within your limits!doesnt take $10,000 semen to raise shooters. If you didnt read tims thread, read it.

Most people in the deer business would have a heart attack if someone handed them a check for $460,000 , thats most people life wages!

99mash that is the beauty of it all......you get to raise these awesome animals and have a great time doing it and then there is always that chance of a big bonus on top of it all..........what more can you ask for?!
