We ran into trouble this weekend. One of our three month old doe fawns ripped her mouth wide open. We don't know what happened, but we got her fixed up. Ended up with 8 stitches on the inside of her mouth and 8 more on the outside.

you do the stitching or a vet?? Dang good work, it takes me all day to tie off sutures.

We split the task. I have done them a few times but these inside ones that hook the lip back up to the bottom of the jaw was a little to much for me.Outside stitches were the easy part for sure!

Mike how did the vet stich it on the inside? What did he stich too. its all bone. I just had a fawn do the same thing, but he didn't rip the lip. Just pulled the whole thing down from the front teeth back about 2.5". I went right behind the front teeth and tied the lip up. (on top of the jaw bone down and around the bottom of the lip to hold it back up so it would reattach.

It was ripped a bit more than 2.5in and most of the injury was on the side of the mouth. When you get back away from the front teeth there is some room to stitch. Alot of the flap tightend back up by stitching the side of the mouth. Still have to keep a close eye on her to make sure that bottom lip reattaches to the bone.

Did you go from inside the mouth back out to the outside, Like so the string goes through her front teeth?

Made a circle over top of the jaw bones (under the tongue) and then on the outside of the lip. Pretty much like a noose around the jaw and the flapping lip. It is holding it in but the piece of the lip in front of the front teeth still moves but I don't think there is a way to keep that from moving. I am planning on leaving it on there for another week and then cut it off to see if it has started to reattach. IDK how it managed to ripping it clean back with out tearing any of the lip like yours did.

Next time you bottle your fawns take one of the good fawns and slide that skin down off the lower jaw. Its strange how far that skin goes down away from the bottom teeth as far as it does. The vet got the last stitch about a quarter inch from the bottom teeth before he hit solid bone and could not stitch.

Unreal that it took about 45 minutes to fix her, She woke up, Hung around for about 10 minutes and then walked over to the feeder and crunch, crunch, crunch on pellets and cracked corn. How could that not hurt her face and she went right at her bottle last night, Although she drinks like she has a hole in her mouth. lol...She losses a bit! Let me know how yours makes out!!

Good to hear yours is so similar to mine. Mine took to the bottle again same night. I keep washing out the front part infront of teeth because I am worried about getting stuff stuck in there. I never thought to pull the other ones lip down to see how far it is un attached. Ill have to take a look I might be secured right up until the correct point.
