Two dead fawns in one week. HELP!!!

I've had two fawns die this past week. Both of them started just a couple of days before with some problems in their limbs, one in all legs and the other one just in the front ones. They could not stand or walk as if they had no strength in their legs. There was no apparent lesion.

We thought it may have been a thiamine deficiency and the vet recommended some vitamins (B1 included) and banamine. We were also told to give them some antibiotics. They showed some improvement at first but did not survive the second night.

The lab is running some tests to know what they had but I need to anticipate in case there are more cases before I get the results. Any thoughts???

Thanks

Ed

Novillo I'm running blood work on a buck fawn with similar issues. I thought it was EHD at first, now I don't know. Texas A & M doing lab work. Please post any info you get back, thanks -Jason

scotts thats what i was thinking and i believe he is in mexico so the fawns might still be on the bottle..not sure on that one..I think that goats milk will affect some and mabey that jonies(spelling)1

This buck went down in front legs now can't do much more than pick uP his neck and head a little. Given everything for a deficiency! !!! Antibiotics that cross blood brain barrier. This thing weighs easy 65+ lbs. Kinda scary ! Testing for EHDand what type as well as cbc . Bacterial / Viral? Waiting. I hate waiting.

Both fawns have been about 4mo old and mother raised. We've had some EHD (confirmed by lab) this year but only on those with northern influence. No Texas animals have been infected so far.

If they are mother raised, should I discard colostrum deficiency?

As to being EHD, the vet mentioned that EHD can manifest itself at a later stage (once it reaches the nervous system) and when it is almost impossible to cure. He thinks this might have been the case but we're still trying to figure this out.

Will post results once I get them. Thanks for all your replies.

i have had fawns show these symptoms, but i discovered it had to be white muscle disease, it can kill them quickly give them a does of Bo-Se asap.. I had much sucess with giving Bo-Se.

I've seen a tremendous amt of EHD this year, even in full south tx genetics. I've had good luck with dexamethasone at 5cc per 100 lbs im and 3 cc per 100 lbs sq excede. Don't use banamine. We have a patent pending immune product treatment for EHD now that we have used on over 60 deer with EHD with 88% success this year. We will continue research thru the winter and this will be available next year. Good luck and God bless

Well i got the results back from Texas A&M today. No EHD! CBC showed no viral or bacterial infection. My deer is clean as a whistle. Did my vet read the x-rays correctly? He is thinking slipped disk? Time and TLC I guess?

Banamine will increase kidney damage in dehydrated animals and will cause increase ulceration of the gut if already starting to ulcerate, as with EHD
