Mr. Murphy,

With all due respect I was wondering as to why you are attacking the deer breeding industry and not the farm related industries such as dairy, poultry, etc? Let's talk about the dairy industry for just one second. "Today one cow can produce the milk it once took 10 cows to produce."

http://aipl.arsusda.gov/kc/cowfacts.html

Now to me that would mean that somewhere along the way genetics were taken into consideration and farmers used these genetics to their advantage. Getting more milk to consumers faster than what it used to take - pretty simple business. The deer industry is no different. Us deer farmers are using the best genetics to improve the industry as a whole, which in turn will make our customers happy.

On a side note, if these cows were to grow, as you put it "grotesque" antlers, would you then decide to attack the dairy industry?

Any information would be greatly appreciated and posted on deer-forums.

Thanks,

Zach Nelson

I'm sure if Mr. Murphy had the MO Monarch, Beatty Buck, Tony Lovstuen's buck, and the other giant 300 inch non-typical "grotesque bucks" come under his stand he would pass them up because they weren't the look that "he" likes, whatever, what a clown with an ego. They act like a big buck can't grow to 300 inches in the wild, and if it did it would be "grotesque"! GIVE ME A BREAK, A FREE RANGE 300 INCH BUCK WOULD BE THE MOST HUNTED BUCK IN THE COUNTRY IF EVERYONE KNEW WHAT COUNTY IT LIVED IN. I've got another news flash for em, the world record wild buck gets killed several hundred times every year, it just wasn't old enough REACH it's potential. 99% of the country wants quality deer but when it comes down to it, few ever have the patience to practice it. I'm so tired of people telling me what I should like or dislike or where or where not I should hunt. If you don't want to hunt behind a fence, then don't. Everything they preach to do for bigger deer is some kind of "manipulation". These same clowns preach that a 3 yr. old is a mature buck, I guess maybe if your talking testicles but if it's antlers, they still have about 2-3 years before reaching maturity. A high fence is built more for people management, because without people management you can't have deer management.

"Some Facts about the CWD Positives in Missouri"

1. Five CWD positives have been found in Missouri. All 5 were from healthy animals as a result of a hunter harvest.

2. At least some of the 5 were probably later consumed before the CWD positive was found.

3. Three of the positives were inside enclosures and 2 were from outside enclosures in what we term as “free ranging whitetails. The 3 found inside enclosures were from natural born animals or what are referred to as “native animals within the enclosures. It is possible these deer originated from deer that were in the enclosures at the time the enclosures were built.

4. At the time the first ones were found, the enclosures were being monitored and tested at a fairly high level while the free ranging deer were being tested very little. It only makes sense that if CWD were present in the area that it would be found in the enclosures first. You only find something when you are looking or testing for it.

5. In 2005, the Missouri Department of Conservation quit testing for CWD. From 2001 to 2005 they had taken almost 23,000 samples at that time without a positive. In the target area of 6 counties where the positives were later found, they had taken 1281 samples. There are 3881 square miles in that area and the deer population is estimated at 64 per square mile or 248,384 deer. So they sampled about ½ of 1 percent.

6. In 2005, the Missouri Department of Conservation took 24 samples statewide and 0 samples in the 6 county area where CWD was later found. In 2006, they took 25 samples statewide and 1 sample in the 6 counties.

7. Sometime in 2005-06 it was pointed out in a CWD Task Force meeting that since the MDC was no longer testing, if we found it in Missouri, it would be found by the cervid industry. Of course that was true.

8. In 2007 the MDC started sampling again by hiring taxidermists to take lymph nodes from adult trophy bucks. From 2007-2009, they collected 4221 samples with 367 coming from the 6 counties. It is note worthy that the breakdown is 331 in 2007, 8 in 2008, and 28 in 2009 from the 6 target counties. That is a very small sample size in 2008 and 2009. All together during those 3 years they tested .15 of 1 percent of the deer population in that area.

9. Collection of lymph nodes is not considered accurate enough and not approved for use by the cervid industry.

10. The enclosures have a game proof fence around them. All deer introduced into the enclosures must meet strict monitoring and testing requirements for CWD, TB, and Brucellosis. Captive deer are the healthiest and most monitored and tested species of animal in the United States. The free ranging deer can move about anywhere and could walk in from just about anywhere. They have no monitoring or testing requirements for ANY disease. In fact free ranging deer in general are tested very little as seen by the facts above.

11. There has never been a case where a CWD positive has been traced back to a herd that was monitored for over 5 years. NONE!

12. After finding the first CWD in an enclosure, authorities tested over 1100 deer both inside and outside the enclosure and found no more positive deer. That number is rarely seen in the press.

13. The people who raise captive deer are also hunters and care about the wild deer herd on an almost absurd level. When people know the real facts surrounding CWD, they will realize that the captive deer industry posies no threat to our great deer populations. In fact, it was our industry that found the positive even though there is no proof of where it came from. More than likely it “walked in from the very low monitored free ranging population or came in from remains of cervids brought in from out West. We really don’t know.

The point we should be making is our our deer are MUCH healthier and MUCH more tested and disease free than ANY free-ranging deer in ANY state!

Will there be a time in the near future that the whole CWD thing will be throwen out the window? When will they realize it is not wiping out the free ranging herds. It is not affecting the wild population at all.

States do not have the money to be testing, and it's not fair the deerfarmer does all the testing. The people that are fighting us keep bringing up the CWD issue. It seems sometimes, that's all they have to fight with.

Will there be a time that we can campaign to get rid of the whole CWD scare. Make people realize it does not make sence to kill 1000 deer to look for 1 CWD positive healthy deer.

Or is now the time right, when funding is gone?

Kill 1,000 to look for 1 cwd positive just shows the mentality of these people, the CWD deal is all they have right now that they can make up something bad against cervid breeders and the uninformed people keep hearing it over and over so they think it must be true. Kill em all in the wild, then we might get rid of it, even before anyone even knows how or where it comes from for sure, great thinking like most gov't operations.

Yep...their ''cure'' is much worse than any negative ''cause'' by CWD.

CWD is the cash cow the DNR needs to get funding. Why would the legislators cut fundings to the DNR when the DNR hangs CWD outbreaks over there heads? Doesn't QMDA understand that if a live test for CWD or a vaccine for EHD comes about, it will be for a large part from the support of deer farmers and NADEFA. Go to the Iowa's DNR website. They credit deer farms for repopulating the wild herd back in the 1930's. Back then the WT deer in Iowa were almost extinct. I remember my parents talk about the first time they ever saw a WT deer in SE. Minn. back in the 1930-40's. If an EHD outbreak ever occurred in Iowa or Minnesota, it would kill wild deer in unbelievable percentages. Our native deer have no resistance to EHD. They may need us to repopulate the wild herd.

CWD is a BSE based prion disease. It was proven by a DR. that won the nobel prize back in 1997 that 1 out of a million animals would develop BSE naturally. It makes sense, BSE is a mutated protein. We have not seen CWD spread rappantly in the wild deer like the DNR predicted in SE. Minn.

Does anyone have all the email address's of all the sponsors of QDMA? The Wisconsin board would like to distribute to all of our membership to get mass complaints to them. If not I will finish looking them up but thought maybe someone would have them all

That is a great post by Keith Warren!!! We are lucky to have him on our side bringing the industry out in the open with his shows and getting more and more people interested in deer farming. I think that is whats scaring these other organizations, they see the deer breeding and hunting ranch industry growing more and more each year and getting better while the public hunting managed by the state agencies gets worse. Remember, the state DNR's and private ranches are competing for those same hunter dollars. Of course they are against private ownership, they don't have complete control of your deer. This is also the reason the QDMA wants it to be controlled by the state DNR departments rather then the Dept. of Ag, they know the DNR will get them shut down one way or another and most states Depts. of Ag want to grow agriculture opportunities which is exactly what we are doing.

We just had a meeting with our South Dakota animal Industry board last month about the new CWD testing in the private deer and elk herds and hunting ranches and they are pretty much at the point that they will leave it up to us(Elk & deer breeders) to come up with a plan of how WE want to test animals that are never leaving the state(elk for slaughter, hunts, etc.), maybe just test sick ones that die for unknown reasons or a small %. They really acted like they didn't even care about testing any at all anymore and couldn't see a real threat from our cervid breeders but thought it would be better for our industry to still test some to please the public perception. He said since we started mandatory testing we haven't found any CWD in any confined private herds in the state and thats been about 15 years now I think(SD was the first state I believe). The people who have breeding farms that want to ship out of state will still have to test all those animals in those herds. It was his belief that without the Federal money to test most states would also go with minimal testing on hunt ranches and slaughter operations, etc. that don't ship out of state. He said that the feelings between most of the state vets he's talked with is that the disease isn't really as bad as they first thought and most areas that are known to have it haven't noticed any substantial loss of animals from it, nothing compared to what EHD, blue tounge, wolves and mountain lions kill each year.

I used to bowhunt a public island in the middle of the Missouri river that was about 600 acres, it was great deer hunting before the public over hunted it and ruined it. I always thought how much better it could be if it was managed instead of the public just killing off every young buck and doe they could. Well, I think more an more people are figuring out that they can make there own island with a fence (myself in another year or so)and be able to manage it better then the public and the DNR, that's why the state game agencies are against high fences, they know private people can produce the one thing that most of the public really wants and that is more big bucks. 95% of the people who are against high fence hunting are against any kind of fee or commercial hunting. If it was a law that all of the private preserves had to provide just as many free hunts for huge bucks to the public as they do to paying clients, they would be all for them. Yes, we have liberals in the hunting world too!! Lets keep those letters and e-mails going to these sponsors of the QDMA, I wonder what Tecomate seed thinks of it, Tecomate ranch is managed by high fence and selective breeding.

The Outdoor Patriot Defends Private Property Rights and Deer Farming

AUSTIN, Texas — The Outdoor Patriot Show welcomes award-winning outdoor television host Keith Warren for a one-on-one interview about deer farming and the recent attacks on the industry by the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA). This month’s show is now available online at www.OutdoorPatriot.com, Apple iTunes, Facebook, Twitter and hundreds of other online venues.

“The anti-hunting radicals have to love this! QDMA continues to launch attacks at the deer industry, saying ‘This is a battle we simply can't afford to lose.’ But I have to ask....is fragmenting the wildlife industry, pitting one group of hunters against other hunters, redirecting valuable resources which should be used to defend our hunting heritage from Tofu Terrorists really QDMA's battle royale? If so, it won't matter if QDMA wins the battle, because we will ALL lose the war. Hunters must stand united!” said John Meng, host of the Outdoor Patriot Show.

In this episode of Outdoor Patriot, Meng also talks about the growing sense of entitlement among some sportsmen and their apparent disregard for private property rights.

.

“The entitlement mentality that is so prevalent in our society today now seems to have infected the outdoor industry. Apparently some sportsmen feel that hunting on someone else’s property is their right and that perhaps hunting land should also be an entitlement to be redistributed so Have-not Hunters can get their fair share,” says Meng. “We cannot allow ourselves to be sucked into the class warfare debate that’s fostering unrest and disruption in our nation today. As sportsmen, we’re all the same. It doesn’t matter if your rich or poor. The only thing that should matter is whether you love the outdoors and you want to preserve our hunting heritage.”

One of America's newest and freshest voices speaking out for our outdoor way of life, Meng is an award-winning writer and editor, who has contributed to multiple outdoor television shows and published more than a hundred articles specific to the hunting and deer industries. He is president of the American Deer & Wildlife Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to growing the outdoor industry and preserving our outdoor traditions through youth education and public awareness.

The National Wildlife Federation is the biggest bunch of liberal self "entitled" hunters in the country and hide behind there name just as the QDMA, it sounds like they are doing something to protect wildlife if you read the name. They are overhunting and ruining most of the public lands across the country and now they want to ruin the private landowners as well in the name that the wildlife belongs to them. They are more of a threat the the Humane Society because in most states they have at least 2 full time lobbiests fighting for the "right" to hunt anywhere and fight against any good commercial hunting opportunities for landownerssuch as landowner tags, etc.. They are just like the anti-hunting lady Charly Seale was interviewed with on the 60 minutes show, they don't get that if something has value people will manage it better. They have the feeling that since they won't pay to hunt and be able to hunt a good commercial operation for free then nobody else should be able to. Here's another interesting article that ties the two oganizations together. I'll bet they have never given the conservationist of the year award to an actual landowner who ALSO does commercial hunting. Remember, when you have nothing, you have nothing to loose.

This is an actual e-mail from Titans UTV's president. The response name is the only thing altered in this letter to protect the member who wrote to this company.

XXXX, thanks for the email and I can appreciate your position. I can tell you first hand as my family and I live in Texas and we see the Deer Breeding Operations and have friends that breed deer. I also know that some deer breeders sell deer to other hunting operations where they are let out into smaller high fence places only to have people come in (both in state and out of state) and shoot these deer (which most have been bottled feed since they could walk). Because the buck did not have the genetics they were looking for they are let out and shot by a hunter to have pictures taken and mounted on the wall to show off. To me, that is sickening and no sport in the harvesting of deer.

We currently lease over 6,000 acres in Texas (all low fence) that we take our family and friends out to enjoy. In addition to deer, turkey, pigs and varmints are also harvested.

Send me your website of your hunting ranch if you get a chance.

Sorry he is a Texan, I guess there are narrow minded people all over!

It's good to see that folks are emailing and watching this, it looks like, in a lot of associations, there isn't anything being done for these 7 states, NADeFA is going at it and Keith Warren, thank goodness. This fear mongering, politically motivated, agenda driven propaganda shouldn't be able to work over and over again for years and years, needs to be fought hard and fast and not just state by state when it all comes down. Hoping for growth forward instead of standing where we are and trying to stay there or stepping back!

Here is an e-mail I just got back from Purina.

Cody,

Thank you for expressing your concerns. After careful and thoughtful review of our wildlife advertising and sponsorships, we are not continuing our national sponsorship of the QDMA.

CEO (Brian Murphy) Worked in a Deer Breeding Facility

Brian Murphy

Wildlife Biologist and CEO of Quality Deer Management Association

Brian Murphy was born in New Mexico and raised in Texas and Oklahoma. His life-long passion for the outdoors led him to pursue a career in wildlife conservation and management. Brian received his B.S. in Range and Wildlife Management from Texas Tech University and his M.S. in Wildlife Resources from the University of Georgia. Following graduation, Brian worked as a Wildlife Research Coordinator for the University of Georgia where he coordinated all deer research. In 1993, Brian accepted the position of Deer Biologist for the Australian government. During Brian's four years “down under,” he implemented the concepts of Quality Deer Management and Property-based Game Management on more than 500,000 acres. During his last year, Brian established a Game Management Unit within the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service, only the second such unit in Australia at the time. In 1996 Brian received the National Conservation Award from the Australian Deer Association.

Upon returning to the United States in 1997, Brian accepted the position of Chief Executive Officer with the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA). During Brian’s 12 years with QDMA, membership has grown from 3,400 to 50,000 in all 50 states, Canada and several countries. Today, QDMA is widely regarded as the most respected and influential whitetail organization in North America.

Brian also is a prolific writer and speaker, having conducted over 600 lectures on deer biology and management and published nearly 120 popular and scientific articles and book chapters.

BRIAN MURPHY HAS BENEFITED FROM RESEARCH IN DEER BREEDING FACILITITES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA. HE WORKED WITH THE AUSTRAILIAN DEER ASSOCIATION ( A HIGH FENCE DEER BREEDING ASSOCIATION) TO IMPROVE THEIR PROGRAM.

THIS CEO OF QDMA IS TAKING A HYPOCRITICAL STANCE AND WHO HAS MADE MONEY OFF OF HIS SCHOLASTIC PARTICIPATION IN THE DEER BREEDING INDUSTRY. NOW THAT HE HAS A NAME AND A TITLE HE WANTS TO USE THIS TO KEEP OTHERS FROM BENEFITING FROM THE DEER BREEDING INDUSTRY.

QDMA NEEDS TO REMOVE BRIAN FROM HIS POSITION AT QDMA. HE HAS COMPROMISED HIS STATUS AS A UNBIASED LEADER FOR THE QDMA, ATTACKING THE VERY INDUSTRY THAT GAVE HIM THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE TO AQUIRE HIS DEGREE AND POSITION OF AUTHORITY.

SEND THIS TO ALL THE SPONSORS OF QDMA.
