I had a doe fawn that was born 6 weeks ago. found it with a broken bone above hock back right leg. put a splint on for 3 weeks. took it off and fawn was starting to use leg, after 2 weeks started noticing it was not useing leg. took back to vet did xrays ,and found a new fracture same leg under hock.

put new cast on.

question is will leg die from poor circulation should i take cast off and use splint.has anybody ever experianced fawn with broken leg.

looking for suggestions.

John, I have had and currently have two fawns with cast and they have done fine. My vet does a check up on them once a week to make sure everything is ok. Just try to keep the cast as dry as possible and you should be fine. GOOD LUCK...

I had a buck fawn last year that broke his leg, and we had the vet cast it.

We left the cast on for one week then cut it off and checked it. It was healed almost all the way. The vet advised recasting it for an additional week so we did. The second cast was casted alittle bit loose to allow for growth of the leg. When to second cast was taken off, the leg was completly healed. We also kept it as dry as possible, do to the fact that we pulled it and bottle feed it. The leg healed with no sign of that it was ever broken. We used ADM goat milk replacer and think that had alot to do with the fast healing of the leg.

We have had fawns with broken legs several times over the years. We have attempted to cast some and splint others. the ones that seemed to do the best, were the ones that we did nothing to. We just left them with the mothers and let nature take its course. Within a few weeks, they were all healed up and no signs of injury.

Good luck

Two years ago we had a buck fawn break his back leg between the hip and the hock. We did nothing except bottlefeed him and keep him penned up. Six weeks later he was better and broke the leg again between the hock and the ankle, again we did nothing except bottlefeed him and keep him immobile as possible.

He grew out to be our best yearling a 6 X 5 mainframne , 14 points and scored 131"
