What the heck is it???

I sold this buck fawn to a guy in Ohio a few months ago. He sent me these pictures tonight. At first I thought the skin had been ripped off, but after zooming in it looks like something is wrapped around the fawns upper jaw area. It actually looks like a piece of "paper" bark wrapped perfectly around his mouth. I have no idea how something like this could happen. I'm hoping that is just falls off, but I wanted to see what everyone's opinion was here.

1. What do you think it is?

2. What would you do if anything?

Thanks guys... the farmer that bought this fawn is a really good guy and I want to try and help him out in any way possible.

I would tranq and remove the (whatever it is).

Thanks Scott... I appreciate your advice. He's a new deer farmer... would you recommend he has a vet present as well, just in case?

Is the deer located on an old syrup farm? It appears to be a piece of tin used in bleeding syrup or turpentine from trees.

I agree remove it. The first thing that came to mind for me was metal as well. As to is a vet needed? I would think it should be rather simple to handle. If it is metal have a snipper handy and make small cuts and take your time.

I think I would have a vet present. The depression around the edges suggest that some inclusion may have taken place, but it is really hard to tell from a photo. If it has grown into the lip or gums, a vet would be an asset.

I put the photo of it on the TV 72" hd its bark not metal, I think it need to come off.

It appears there is a piece of hay sticking out on photo #2 (at first glance it may look like he is eating a piece of hay, but actually it is bent right at the top & sticking out of whatever this thing is), so I don't think the item has been on there for very long, otherwise, I think the hay would have broken off. I would not be surprised to find out this is a piece of bark that he is actually sucking on. I hope it's that simple anyway. Good Luck to your friend & the fawn.

Looks like birch bark to me probly fall off in day or so if not tranq and remove yourself don't see any need for vet. If you do remove and there is infection or a open wound give some antibiotics thats all a vet is going to do.

Ditto. Tranq is stressfull and the bark will probably come off on its own in a couple of days when he gets tired of sucking or chewing on it.

Joe called me this morning after darting the buck fawn. It was indeed a perfectly round piece of bark that he managed to get right over his nose. They removed the bark and he is doing fine.
