What to expect from what I hope is a false positive TB test

Here's the number for the Minnesota board of animal health 651-296-2942

I know the number. Our Inspector from the Board of Animal Health is the one who told me this today!

Our vet and State inspector is telling us if we use the blood test and one is positive we have to kill the animal for further testing! I see from posts above that doesn't seem to be true! Who should I have them call to get the right information? I would think our State Inspector would have the right information since he works for the Board of Animal Health directly!

Hey Ryan,

From what I was told if you have a false positive here in MN, they do a second test right away which is less sensitive and if it still tests positive you have a choice to retest in 30 days and at that time you would have to kill the animal if it still tests positive. Your other option is to stay in quarantine and wait until the Feds jump on board and allow the skin test to be used when the blood test shows positive. You wouldn't loose your status while you are in quarantine. If you do end up killing the animal and it tests negative you will be compensated up to $3000.00 while the funds are still available.

That sounds better than what they were telling me! I don't have to test until January...so who knows what will be going on by then!

My second test just came back positive. I am now in the process of having the suspect animal appraised and was told by the feds that they will pay up to $3000.00 if the appraisal comes in at that amount or higher. I will be in quarantine until the autopsy is complete. Glad I pulled the fawns. No concrete answer on what to expect out of the fawns when they are tested this winter. Just for information, I am not certified and will be doing my second herd test this winter for certification.

BJ, I have had false positives in the past, I have been watching your thread and I was sure that the second test would come back as a negative. Would you keep us posted as to how the state handles this? I would ask for a third test before they destroy the animal. Let me know if I can help you in any way. Darren

Talked to the USDA Vet today as my appraisal has came in. I was told that destroying the animal was the only option per law as there has already been two positive blood tests for TB. The will test samples from the animal and the Vet is certain they will be negative. This course of action is to re-evaluate the blood tests results as there have been more false positives than they expected with the test. I guess the only good news from this is they will compensate me $3000.00 for the animal and it's not a total loss. As I have read many say on here before, it's always your best deer and it's the same in this case. Definitely not getting what she is worth.
