I was wondering if some of you could tell me who buys your shooters??? Better yet i guess would be do the ones you support..support you back?

In the last 5 days since i was asked to help with the ny assc auction i have had the pleasure of speaking to about 40 farmers that have consigned stuff in the auction and i have heard some real good stories and some real, real bad ones. The biggest thing that concerns me and i feel is one of the things that needs to change in order for this industry to get turned around is this...

Many i have spoke to buy animals from alot of bigger farmers with bigger names that never ever spend a dollar to buy your shooters but then we sell to someone that has deer (Same bloodlines)for sale at the same price or cheaper and we dont support them!!!! Why.... We all know there are some in this industry that sell their deer at very high prices and are all about making a sale but give nothing back to us little guys that supported them!!!!!!!

Just a thought that i would like to hear your thoughts on..If im all wet here feel free to say so!!!

Wow 159 views of this and not one opinion!!! That is scary. It just makes no sense to me to buy animals from some of these big name farmers that never buy any shooters back. We all say we need these places to move our product and then we buy animals from farms that raise their own shooters and never buy one back..I would hate to see that day when you have shooters to sell and you find a farm looking for them at top dollar only to find out they wont take yours because you dont support them.

Alright Mike, I'll break the ice here. Preserve owners I've moved deer to in the last few years: Harry Strawser, Russ Walk, Mike Gee, & Tim Yarnell. Anyone else care to share?

I have heard the Walks say at auctions that if you buy there semen they will buy any shooters you produce out of it. I am not sure if it applys to all the semen they sell or just the semen they sold at that auction but thats pretty good support to know you have your shooters sold before they are born.

Randy thats exactly my point. There are only so many farms out there that will buy shooters every year and there are a whole group of them that will never buy one back from us.I know this is not a perfect world and im learning more every day like everyone else but i know from here on in i will be supporting the ones that will support me back.I heard the walks bought over 200 bucks this year.If thats 100% true i can't say but i do know they bought some because a good friend of mine is also a best friend of russ sr and he says he has logged alot of miles with russ this year looking at shooters.Im glad dustin put some names out there and i know dakota whitetails also get some shooters from farms so there is farms that buy from us and also have the same or better genitics as the farms that want to sell but have no use to ever buy back...Food for thought!!

Sorry for the delay on responding.

My Dad (Russ Sr) did buy a good amount of bucks this year. To brag up my Dad a little he bought over 40 bucks this year that we did not need but decided to buy since they were out of his genetics that was purchased from him (There were also over 75 out of our genetics that we bought that we did need right away. take the bone with the meat right?).

We receive emails all the time about shooters and 75% of the email is about how stacked the pedigree is and how it is line bred with all the best bucks in the country. One thing I found after 10 years of hunting and guiding is not a single hunter has ever asked about a pedigree or if it comes from one of the guys that is considered to be a big guy in the industry.

In the future we plan to start off with buying the bucks that are out of our bucks and does. We then go and search for big typicals 200"+ no stickers and some big non typicals.

We are trying to breed for what hunters like. This also makes it much easier buying shooters produced by our bucks since we try to breed for hunters demand.

Hey heath..Welcome back. You must be spending alot of time in the box blinds as you have not been on in awhile and im sure the hunts have started.Your dad buying only your farms genetics to begin is a very smart move.Like you said if someone buys a bred doe off the farm you guys know what that doe is capable of producing.Again some of the top selling deer at the ohio sale came from some farms that will never buy stocker bucks. If one farm had a special line that people wanted i could understand buying that special deer but there are very few if any lines that only one farm has.Support those that will support you or someday you could find yourself with a pen full of stockers with no place to go!!!
