I have been talking with alot of folks about bottle feeding thier fawns this year. Was courious to see how many folks are doing it again this year and how many you were going to feed ?and what product you would be using for milk replacer?

I have talked with some who are not going to feed this year and for one person it was the first time in 19 years that they would not be bottle feeding.

And others who were only doing a set amount regardless of how many fawns they had.

Just thought it would be interesting to see what everyones thoughts were on the subject!:)

I am bottle feeding all of my doe fawns. Personally I am not willing to go back to mother raised does. I like my does calm.

I use Fox Valley.

Just doing fawns out of some of our does that have proven themselves already if they have doe fawns. Also...any abandoned fawns even if they are bucks, because I cannot turn my head the other way! Going to try a milk replacer made by Pipestone Vet Clinic....in Pipestone, MN this year. I've heard others have had good luck with in deer. Pipestone is one of the top sheep vet clinics in the US....this is their own milk replacer and I'm only 30 miles away. Convenient!

How much do they get for the replacer Susan?

We hope to not bottle feed any deer this year. We will pick one up if it is in trouble or the mother dies, but then we try to put it back with a doe that has just had fawns if we can. Our deer are relatively calm without bottle feeding and they work through the handling system a LOT easier if they aren't bottle fed. We will have about 250 fawns this spring so it is out of the question. Actually we feel they do better on the mother than bottle feeding them as well. It is great if you are looking for really tame deer that will run up to the pen so you can feed them etc. We have a few that way and are satisfied with that.

what is the MAIN reson people arent going to bottle feed ??????

Zoologic! Used it for 5 years with no scours or any other problems.

4 times a day for the first week or two then i go to 3 times a day at the rate Zoologic recommends. I move to 3 times as fast as possible so I can feed at 6 am then 3 pm then 11 pm. This works best for my work schedule, and has worked well.

I will do all the doe fawns I will sell or keep for the herd.

I plan to bottle a few fawn's, just my best doe fawn's I plan to keep for replacement's. Red cap for my fawn's.

We're planning on bottle feeding everything again this year. On our farm, it makes monitoring their health and handling much easier. We'll be using raw milk and milk replacer at a 50/50 mix rate. We're not sure which replacer we'll be using yet.

We will feed all the fawns that we get from AI (bucks and does)

We use Land-O-Lakes Kid replacer. Its resonable priced and local.

We give a scour tube on the fawns with-in 12 hrs.

Crocket - you asked the main reason people AREN'T bottlefeeding - too much time, better results when left with mother (virtually no health issues), easier to move through the handling system when not bottle fed, and we definitely wouldn't want tame bucks since we have a hunting preserve.

$48/bag which is reasonable enough. I just can't justify feeding anything that costs more these days. And its easily accessible for me.

Hey Susan, How many fawns willa bag feed ?

wow ok , thanks , i was thinking was because of cost ? i beleave for what its worth ( not much ) the more you handle them the more com they will be

Crocket, I think for many cost is a big factor in the number of fawns they are going to feed..............if any!

I really didn't consider cost - just the cost of the time it takes. We have a lot of things we like to do in the summer and bottle feeding just doesn't work real well. As far as the deer being comfortable with us - like I said we have a few that are very tame and we aren't really looking for that in every pen (we have 40 pens). We also know that when it comes time to sort the does and fawns, or do TB testing, and we have to run them through the chute, those tame does do not move through as well as the others. Our deer aren't wild and bouncing off the walls by any stretch of the imagination. They move away from you when you go into the pen for the most part, which is just what we want when we move them through the chute system. Once they've gone through a few times it really works very well.

One more thing on bottle feeding - I know a lot of people do it all the time without any issues BUT there are a lot of times when one thing or the other is going wrong - runny stool, over eating a whole host of things that we can avoid by just leaving them with mom.

We will be bottle feeding some of our doe fawns out the wilder mothers. We skip a year every year because our deer are already calm. We use the Superior Milk replacer from Whitetails sales and it works great!! My honest opinion is that the fawns do seem to grow better on the mother and are healthier. Our experience has worked best when deer are exposed to you on a daily basis, with treats, and they calm down real easy. There is always a crazy one that has to go asap. Just my opinion.
