Hello all,

Having a bit of a problem getting rid of the 50-75 Turkeys in the deer pen. I'm concerned about the potential impact on the health of my deer. No problems as of yet, but they have been in the feed trough and have been leaving deposits in there (if you know what I mean):)

How can I get them out?

Is it risky for the deer health wise with them in there?

No big deal?

thanks,

Tell me about it, I chase them, but they refuse to fly out.

What if you tried using and idea similar to that of fruit farmers. They have brightly colored streamers hanging above thier crops. I have seen that in cherry orchards. If this is not in a shooting preserve and you were not opposed to it maybe it would have the same effect on the turkeys as it does on all the birds that enjoy eating the cherrys when they are on the trees. If not maybe you could contact the state and ask if they might be interested in trapping them and relocating the whole flock. Who knows just brainstorming.

I'm all ears at this point, asking the DNR for help would fall on deaf ears (budget problems). Then again the less they visit the better.:)

thanks,

As long as they are in your pen eating your feed i would shoot them. They do taste very good deep fryed.

I hear you on the DNR thing. I really hear you all loud and clean on the deep frying too! a .22mag does the trick real well from what I hear.

fried turkey breast with gravy over homemade buttermilk biscuits.......its a fave in my house hahaaa

Maybe feed them outside the pens if you don't want to shoot them. Still cost you but won't have the health problem.

Tell me about it...Last year I had to pull out a hand full of them after they died cause they couldn't figure how to get out. They kept hitting the fence cause they wouldn't take a long enough run before they tried to fly back over the fence.

I tell you the turkeys here are so bad i have almost hit them opening my door on the house cause they are on the front steps. They aren't very afraid of me when I try to shoo them away so I let the dogs out after them and they are deathly afraid of them even if they don't chase them. The gun might be your best choice here...I don't know if it will detour the ones that don't get shot so you might have a lot of shooting to do but of coures I am not implying you shoot them. ;)

Just think a few votes the other way and the US national bird would be the Wild Turkey ......and we would be talking about how delicious deep fried Bald Eagle is.....

If your deer aren't too close at the time I have found any bird ,roosting sparrows , ect. are scared to death of anything moving their way that is small and large things, deer ,people, cattle ect. , don't scare them much. I got rid of sparrows , hundreds of them, roosting in a guys tree in town. He had even shot guns into the tree but it is just sound and they don't leave. The trick is, kick a basket ball or football up into the tree or across the ground. The ball is "chasing " them and they freak and leave fast and don't come back anytime soon. Give it a try, nothing has to die and I think it will work but don't freak your deer either if you can help it.

I'm gonna try that, thanks. If it fails to get rid of them,
