If I build martin houses will they help keep the bugs that cause EHD down?

Really hard to get purple martins anyway it can take years and years. Ive been trying to get them for about four years still nothing.

We have bluebird boxes up all over the preserve and around the breeder pen. Also have blue martins.I got them the first year I but the box up.

Hi there, yes midge (no-see-ums) do fly. They are low flyers which means they typically fly 2-3 feet off the ground The males harbor in ground cover/vegetation and the females are the ones that do the biting. We utilize fly predators, get rid of all "wet areas" you can, utilize mosquito dunks in water troughs and areas where puddles have formed, keep ground cover/vegetation mowed if you have it in your pens and do not water the ground cover in pens. Some deer farmers want to have lots of ground cover for deer to hide in and fawns which is ideal for native/pasture deer but not for penned deer. Installing spray misters to spray every evening and early morning with 10% pyrethrin is your best bet or utilize a backpack sprayer and do the same.

There is an awesome article the "Deer Tracking" magazine Summer 2009 edition called EHD and Deer Farming by Dan Van Schaik. It explains a lot about the midge life cycle, symptoms and ways to be both proactive and reactive.

Good luck this EHD season!
