Our neighbor has had a young deer, no spots, in his fenced back yard for a couple of months. We all have 5 acre plots around with pretty heavy woods behind us. He ran an electric fence around the top of a 5 ft. regular fence so his goats, etc. can't get out. He also keeps a very big but gentle dog with his animals for their protection. The last couple of days I've seen the deer outside the fence in our back woods. I spoke to my neighbor yesterday to see if he knew the deer was out of the fence and he said yes, and that he had released him back into the wild. The problem is I have an 8 month old Coonhound that has nosed up to the little fawn a couple of times while it was kept inside the fence. I was teaching my Coonhound to be "gentle", (that's a term I use with him and our cats), with deer and not chase them. Today while I was walking my dog in the back woods the little deer showed up and my Coonhound started baying his head off. The deer would dart a few feet away and then stop and look at him. I held my dog on a tight leash and tried to keep him walking while correcting him to be gentle. The deer kept following us home and even tried to come up to my dog though he was barking. This made me worry about the deer's safety. He shows little fear of dogs and he didn't seem afraid enough of my dog though he was baying at him. Also, can an approx. 6 to 8 month old tame deer, who has been very recently released into the wild, do ok in the woods this time a year? Thanks for any advice.
