I purchased some fawns this year from a different farm and I seem to be having all kinds of crazy problems with the fawns......not blaming anyone might be coincidence .........one of the fawns when i got him had kind of thick curly hair in fact we call him curly....but recently he is losing all his hair.....not to the skin he still has some fine hair there just all the thick curly hair is going....is this something to worry about?? He is fine otherwise.........another fawn I noticed today he his basically healthy and eating fine and he looks ok other than i noticed he has a lot of twitches and stuff gong on with his muscles in his back....you can watch the muscles constantly twitching....now i just noticed this today for the first time.....is this something to be concerned over???

I must have stumped everyone......does anyone have any ideas as what these problems could be.......can i treat the fawns......if it is something serious i want to catch it as early as possible.......any ideas would be appreciated.

MAYBE swollen nerves causing the twitching? I dont know. i would try Banamine if i saw the problem. i just dont know. sorry.

Thanks Cameron....maybe he is just a nervous nellie.....who knows as long as he is eating and healthy I will be happy I guess...

Does he look like this, Dennis?

This is a picture of a fawn from a few weeks ago that I went to look at. The owner discribed the symptoms much the same way you are discribing them.

John Maybe kind of like that....but healthier looking ........but maybe i am catching it sooner ....do you know what that fawn was suffering from??? I tis reallyn odd how it's back muscles just keep twitching like crazy...now this morning when saw it it wasn't twitching but by afternoon it was twitching like crazy again!!

I fed a buck fawn last year that lost alot of hair, I never figured it out but he just lost it like crazy but did keep his finer fuzzy hair underneath as you described, none of the other fawns i fed lost their hair. Anyway he was 100% healthy then, and he is healthy to this day, 1 year later. He has a completly normal coat now, So hopefully yours will be fine as well. I sure he will be.

Hair loss in fawns is not that unusual when they are being bottle raised or have been weaned too soon. This is due to basically malnutrition, meaning there was something not present in the diet that was needed. It is usually a vitamin A or D deficiency. This can be solved by giving them a multi-vitamin supplement. One that works well and they really love are One-a-day "Flinstone" vitamins. I give one every 3 days until hair loss, or other symptoms clear-up. They love the flavor and will readily eat them as a treat.

I wonder if he might have some sort of lice, mite, or flea irratating his skin. The little bites cause him to twitch as if a fly had lit on him. Just a thought. Rick

Hey Dennis, can you tell if this fawn is warm? What I mean is possibly his body temp could be running a little higher than normal. Not neccessarily having a fever, just might be normal for him. This would cause him the "shed" his coat to make himself cooler.

Along with the idea that Scott had about the vitamins. When I bottle feed, I always use a multi-purpose LIQUID childrens vitamin. I put 2 or 3 drops in each and every bottle. My fawns were always very healthy.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and suggestions I appreciate it.......the one fawn I am most worried about is the one wo has muscle twitches constantly in his back and down his sides...up unti this morning he was eating fine......but he seemed to prefer to stay inside in his pen and not go outside much with the other fawns........this morning he did not eat well so I am hoping this is not a turn for the worse....I usually don't get concerned until they go a couple of feedings so we will have to see .....but his muscle twitches really have me puzzled.

Had a calf with that problem - vet gave us injectable B vitamins which we gave her for a month and the problem cleared up.

Duh...........check the twitching fawn for parasites, namely lice or fleas before beginning to throw the medicine chest at it. The one losing hair is is most likely difficient in vitamin A. Take a children's chewable daily vitamin and crush to a powder and add it to his milk.

I like getting vitamins in it,maybe some bose and vitamin B complex.and a small amount of wormer wont hurt. Hey D D we got a nice 2yr old out of a Hefty doe...We will get you a picture.
