First Fawns of 2014

We had twin American Express bucks today but one was still born. UGH! Their dam is a Maxbo Ranger on Thunderstorm doe with Pine Creek's JB's sister as the anchor. We are thankful one is healthy! Ok I am editing this to my post. The Ranger doe passed another dead fawn 6 hours after the first was born. She hadn't moved from the original spot where she birthed the first two. She didn't attempt to rupture the placenta on the last fawn. I removed it and photographed it. The body was greenish black in color and was less than half the size of the still born fawn and the healthy buck fawn. I sent the photo to my DVM who informed me that it was a miracle the one fawn was born alive. She said the other one had been dead inside her for some time and was very toxic to the other fawns and the doe. I am darting mom with Draxxin & will be paying DVM Jerri Lee to bottle feed the living fawn. I am very thankful it's a Saturday and that I've had the opportunity to spend most of the day with the deer.

We just had quadruplet bucks out of Thunderstrike and our Allstar daughter....first ever for us on quads that are all bucks.  So far....Thunderstrike has given us 6 bucks and 1 doe fawn (triplets out of Thunderstorm daughter) and we still have our other Thunderstorm daughter that will go here in the next day or two.  She has triplets in her for sure!  Pretty powerful straw!

Redwood River Whitetails,

I am a little envious. We never got that many bucks by pasture breeding. If you have that many bucks out of Thunderstrike I would love to come by next year and see them as yearlings. I will try to plan a fishing trip to the Boundary Waters in the fall so I can be traveling through your neck of the woods. Congratulations

Thanks....we would welcome you!  Hopefully, there will be a few more to add to the list from the other Thunderstorm daughter.  Should have some Allstars too.  Had 3 does bred with him, unfortunately one died a week after LAP.  Pretty sure one took here and the other, maybe only a single.  We will wait and see!

Wow! Real rare for quad bucks! Congrats! And good luck with them Susan!

Redwood River whitetails,

Thunderstrike,Allstar,& Thunderstorm were all collected by Earl Souva and processed by Glss. There were collections on each of them before coming to our farm and I don't know the quality of those. I have confidence Earl won't let semen into the market that is less than excellent quality. That's why he is the only one we let collect our bucks to protect our reputation.

Bell, we had Thunderstrike triplets from a yearling doe two years ago . I believe it was single straw not split.

Greg,

Were any of the trips buck fawns? Did they turn out decent for you? Happy to hear of your conception as well. Thanks

I haven't grown out another breeder out of Thunderstrike that meets my standards yet. I had a real nice yearling out of Thunderstrike we had named JBhunt He broke his skull plate and we lost him recently. He never got to breed. I have very nice two & three year olds growing from him. I have seen big framed yearlings over 200" out of him on other farms. We haven't been as fortunate yet.

Bell, sorry to hear about your American Express stillborns. I am glad you got a healthy one, especially considering you could have lost all the fawns and the doe from the toxic deceased fawn. I hate to see stillborns, but I guess it happens to everyone at some point if you do this long enough. It's happened to me a couple time. There's nothing we can do about it, but it's still heartbreaking to see.

Yesterday me and Travis from Freedom Whitetails went to help a neighbor in need. He is a new farmer and had a doe that pushed the head of her fawn out, and then it was stuck. It should have been hooves first, but the fawn hung up at its shoulders. Not a pretty sight, little helpless fawn and mother in danger. We were going to dart her and adjust the fawn to get his feet out but just as I put her in my scope, she stood up and the fawn slid out slicker than I could even believe. Happy ending this time, the mom and fawn were fine, she had just the single buck fawn. We were three happy and relieved deer farmers.

Antlershed,

Until yesterday I always had thought a doe could push out any fawn coming out any direction. I had seen them walk around with them hanging out for 3-4 hrs but they always got baby out. I just never interfered until yesterday. I had a 2 year old doe having her first fawn breeched or rear legs coming first. I could see the rear feet about 1pm when Dad got home. He watched her most of the afternoon with binoculars. Once she got the baby out as far as the umbilical cord she started cleaning it off. Once the cord was severed I knew it would suffocate. Soon I knew it was deceased and we decided to move her in the barn to attempt to pull it. I was advised by my DVM not to dart her if there could be a second fawn. It was around 7pm at this point. We ran her in and while doing so the shoulders of the fawn came out but the fawn still hung by its head with its feet dragging the ground. We quickly got it pulled in the barn about 7:30pm. The fawn had died at some point point just before labor. It's front feet were stained bright yellow from meconium deficated in the birth canal. Which could indicate why the fawn was breeched and that it was also likely dead prior to labor. This is also why the fawn didn't turn the normal direction to be born. I am certain the mom would have died if in the wild. We checked on her this morning. She is definitely sore but alive! What a day it was, yesterday! another learning experience no doubt.

Thanks Remi I accept it and know that is part of having around 40 adult doe. If I have 10 more doe like that I'm gonna get real concerned I have a feed issue. We Tb tested the end of February. I don't know if that could have caused any problems or not. We ran them all through the handler once.

just had triplet doe fawns out of Cardiac Kid/ Poncho/ Bucky/ Maxbo Ranger

If anyone needs any does, put your deer at my place. I've had 12 doe fawns and three buck fawns so far in three years.

Jeremy, how many does do you have left to fawn? I will pray you get some bucks, although your getting quality doe fawns, a guy can only handle so many does. It's nice to see a buck on occasion. I am off to my best start ever. I usually am very doe heavy, but I have had 6 buck, 8 doe so far with seven more does left to fawn. I am never breeding this many does again, it's just to many fawns for this small farm to handle, lol. So far this morning, I had a set of twin bucks and a single doe. Plus I have two more that look like they could go by this evening, or tomorrow morning at the latest, their tails are up and they pacing hard.

I've got four more to go. Two of which are yearlings so I'm hoping that they'll throw some boys on the ground. Plus I used my best straws on them.

Got a pair of buck fawns with this pedigree. AC Yoesmite's dam is out of Maxbo's full sister. Will be fun to watch these boys grow. Also had a set of trips with the same sire of AC Mojaves dam! Good luck to everyone during fawning. Ryan

Had triplets out of Robert Williams "Bambi Dbl Drop" n Secret Agents mom. (Sudden Impact/Cutie) two boys n a girl! I'm ecstatic :)))

I would say odds are good for a breeder to pop from that. Congrats.

Just got the word we had a set of twin doe fawns born tonight as the sun was setting.

Aces Up on an Updraft daughter. Last year that same cross gave me a set of twin bucks and they are by far the biggest boys in that age group. Very excited to be keeping one of these girls for the program.
