You know Energizer is an awesome typical yearling. (wish he was covering my does) We all know there are other great yearlings out there and next year there will be twice as many. But what I can not figure out is in the forums. With out hunters we will all starve to date has 202 replies and 7332 views. Energizer has 340 Replies and 19185 Views. There are almost triple the number of views for energizer. By the numbers it is evident more breeders are interested in big yearlings than where the industry is headed. What is wrong with this picture. Am I missing something here. Auctions are down, shooter prices are down, hunters are down, 99% of the semen sold is down, most deer farmers are having trouble selling shooter bucks, fawns and does. And still breeders are excited about another big yearling while most hunters could not care less, unless they had their cross hairs on it.

Sorry if I have offended any one. That was not my intention. The deer industry is one of my passions and I see it slipping threw our fingers because we are more concerned about big yearlings, pedigrees and advertising more breeding stock to compound the problem.

Perhaps we need a contest on how to get hunters to harvest our bucks to justify selling more breeding stock and semen.

100% of the deer that do not die in our pens are shot!

The problem is there are too many breeders anymore. In the last three years the number of breeders nation wide has tripled. The market has now become flooded with shooter stock. Now you see shows on TV talking about how great deerfarming has become and it is a "booming" industry. Now, every hunter that is addicted to whitetails are now going out and buying somebody's "junk" does, just to have a deer. Those doe gets bred and have fawns then it goes on, and on. Then comes to my point. Energizer is a est. 200" yearling. If hunters want 170" deer to harvest, those junk does will take 4 to 5 years for their offspring to reach 170".Thats feeding a buck for 4 years, and taking care of him. With Energizer you have a better chance of getting to that 170" mark at a much younger age cutting down on your overhead. That's why everybody is so interested in these big yearlings. Just my thoughts.

BTW I can honestly say that EVERY doe that I have ever culled has went to a hunt area, not a new breeder.

In my opinion the deer industry is not slipping through our fingers but rather the entire US economy, people are afraid to spend their money (even people with money). You cannot expect our industry to be exempt from all other industries in the US. I am also a deer farmer, a newer one to boot and yes I am concerned but more concerned about the total US economy picture because this is what is impacting us the most, if the US economy rebounds so will the deer industry, if the US economy does not rebound it does not matter what industry you are in or how much marketing you do we will not survive.

That being said I believe the timing is right to start an aggresive marketing campaign so we are positioned for an economy on the reboud, we need to show the positive aspects, of a great breeding and nutritional program, benifits of deer farming, benifits of hunting a managed herd in enclosure, etc..... Just my 2 cents

Please dont make it sound like only deer farming is in jeopady and the cause is the deer farmer, the cause is the US economy and nothing more, but yes all deer farmers can do more to help promote what we do.

I think it is easy to figure the numbers out. The energizer contest forum has been running over three times as long as the without hunters forum. Also in the contest the participants had to post four times with guesses over the coarse of the last three months. I think to say that the magority of producers are more worried about a yearling or any deer young or old, than they are about the current state of the industry itself is just an opinion and a statement with very little thought behind it. Maybee just an attempt to create more contraversy and philosophic views for sensless disscussion for people with nothing better to do, on site that has way to much of that already.

JUst my 2 cents.

Wisdom,

I have to agree with you that it is a bit disturbing that there are so many hits on the Young Yearlings thread compared to a Thread that is concerning all of uor future well being. Reed you make a good point but if we don't focus on our future and really focus on it now....you can grow all the beautiful yearlings as fast as you want but your going to have no where to sell them. Rick you are absolutely right we are feeling the effects of the current depressed economy and it was only a matter of time before we would. I do not think Wisdom was saying the reason for the current problems we are facing are due to the Deer farmer....what he is saying is .....to think that this problem is going to go away if we all just ignore it is not good thinking on our part........he realizes the economy is a big part of the problem right now......however, there are a lot more problems out there that need to be addressed or we are going to continue to see the industry decline. Yes when the economy gets better we will see things improve some......but if we do not start advertising and bringing up the new generation to where they are interested in hunting..... we are on a fast down hill slope as far as the number of hunters are concerned. We need to not only promote our High fence Hunting but promote hunting all together....we need to make it a national pastime like it was years ago when I was growing up. It can be done......but we ALL need to band togather...not just a FEW......if we are going to make this Advertising Campaign work......i think that is the point Wisdom was trying to make.

Well said Dennis. You did a great job filling in the gaps of what I was trying to say. I have the same problem with my wife all the time. I say one thing she hears another.

For the last year I have been telling my sons “Expect the best and prepare for the worst” I am sure Noah of the bible while building the ark was thinking along similar lines. “Expect the best and prepare for the worst”
