I'm looking for some feedback on Chaffhaye. The pros and cons. Seems to be a good product, just wanting some real life experiences with it. Thanks. MP

That booth was next to mine at the conference and seemed fairly busy. Looked like a good product for a small farmer. We have about 700 deer and it would be impractical for us. We buy alfalfa by the round bale, several truckloads each fall. I guess it would come down to cost.

Supposedly chafhay will digest better and they will eat it all stem and all. I put some out 2 days ago but most of my deer won't eat it yet. I have 10 free bags coming and will probaly introduce it to my fawns this spring. I agree with wild rivers if you have lots of deer probly better feeding regular bailed alf alfa lot cheaper. As far as the pros go guess we will find out in a few years when people start useing it more.If they digest and absorb more of the the nutrients like they say this would be a good benifit. As far as cons go it seems to be a lot more expensive if it were dry alf alfa in a 50 pound bail you would get way more hay for the money.

Once my deer got a taste for it, they hate it up like crazy. Now, they can't get enough of it. It's great for their rumen and like Virgil said they eat all of it, so there is no waste. So if you factor that in, it's not much more expensive than regular alfalfa and has more nutritional benefits.

she said that a 50lb was equivalent to 75lbs of dry. I put some out, they were scared of it but it was all gone in the morning. I like the idea, I've only got 30 deer and it seems like a great product for this size herd.

We started using it some this summer. At first the deer did not eat that much of it but after a week they all love it.

Pros: They eat all of it, as in no waste. It is supposed to be more digestible. It is in a sealed bag so it stores very well. For us availability was a big deal; getting bales down here was hit or miss and getting them shipped in from out of state cost a fortune. If you buy 2 tons or more they will ship them to your ranch. You don't get covered in dust and chaff when you are feeding deer. You don't have to clean up the hay that they don't eat.

Cons: You have to put it in a pan, you can't just throw it on the ground. Once you open a bag it dries out in a few days so if you use some sort of bulk hay feeder I don't think that it would work well.

We have switched over to Chaffhaye completely and I don't see us going back to normal alfalfa unless the price goes up or we just can't get it any more.

Oh yea, and it smells great also.

Thanks folks. We are looking to switch soon. As far as the cost difference there isn't one. Dry hay cost $ 8-9/bale and the Chaffhaye is the same. It just doesn't make sense to keep buying dry hay when they waste about half of it.

I brought home a few samples from NADeFA, My deer love it ! They ate every last piece of it. Do any of you know the cost of it per 50 lb bag? I bet the shipping is expensive unless someone has it around here and I can pick it up. Ohio

I agree Arrowhead, they waste a bunch of dry hay.....It may be worth it ?

Larry,

I just bought a pallet of it when i was out at the conference........there is a guy only about 20 mins from me who they send the stuff too. i paid 450.00 for a pallet of 40 bags! Hope this helps!

Thanks Dennis. Mitch said you were at NADeFA, but I did not see you there. $450 for a ton, I guess is not to bad considering no waist.

The place you are picking it up at, is it 20 minutes further away from me. It took me about 40 minutes to get to your place. I may have to get the name and order some.

Larry,

Yeah unfortunately it is further North.......the best thing you can do is try to get hooked up with other farmers in your area that are interested in getting the chaffeye too. They will ship it to one of your locations if you order a certain amount.

I bought my first chaffhaye off of the first pallet brought in to Farmer's Co-Op in Sulphur Springs...Close to 2 years??? Deer love it and I've only had white mold in it a few times and that didn't hurt the deer. I mix mine with the pellets (and rice bran as needed) and use a shovel to do that in troughs. Small farm, few deer, works for me. I've been off it for a few months but am going to start it again this Saturday, thanks to Tim, Rowan, and Almighty God.....don't miss the story behind this coming soon!!!

Michael, they said in the feed seminar at NADEFA that you need some stems for what they called the "scratch factor" They said deer need this to keep thier rumen healthy. They also were of the opion that you should limit hay intake to get them to eat as much feed as possible to get the optimun benifit from your feed.

how does it do in rain, snow. $11.25 a bag is alot. I would like to learn more about this stuff. Alfalfa around here is about $3.00 a bale 4th cut. Thanks.

The lady at nadefa said you want to keep it out of the rain to put it under a roof. Probley wouldn't matter if you were feeding fresh every day thowe.

Robert, I read the brochure and you are right, it did say that the white stuff you see is yeast and I have been feeding it with great results. This hay is amazing how it keeps its color and smell and the deer are still eating it everyday even though the snow is gone and they are also eating the young tender clover that is coming up.

How long does it take for them to get used to it mine still have not ate hardly any since i put it out sunday.

Thanks, folks. I rescind my remarks about the white being mold. One thing I like best about it is it acts as a binder when I mix rice bran with it. I do have an appointment with my eye doctor in APRIL!! No kiddin'. 'haven't changed my presciption eye glasses in 5 years.
