I'm forutnate (or unfortunate) to own several thousand acres acres of un deer fenced bush (woodland). There is good hunting & I practice game management. Pigs are particularly abundent.
I keep this as a buffer zone around some of the more exotic animals I raise. Hemorraghic viruses come in more varieties than just EHD & the several klm's between my animals & the neighbours maggot taxi's (sheep) is worth the effort.
My biggest problem is not the pigs but the poachers they attract. The guys who hunt with pig dogs illegally (without permission). I would have had pig dogs in my enclosures at least seven times in the last twelve months & lost close to 30 animals to pigdogs in that period. Yes! I shoot them all & certainly don't shut up about it. I have a good relationship with the local plod, but the courts don't issue harsh penalties. Also most pig hunters only own a dog, they would have no assets to persue in civil courts.
My best defence is my reputation, being a "Grizzly Adams" has its benefits.
The irony, is that through my other roles (hunting ,game management ,animal managent, future leaders), I find that I'm also pighunters greatest advocate. In the last six months this has include defending the rights of legal pig hunters in parliament & at the Aust Institute of Animal Management (a speaker there last year). The executive of the pig hunting orgs are working to resolve some of the issues regarding licencing, insurance, etc. So hopefully these loses that I have along with others can be prevented in future. My opinion is that no particular breed of dog is worse than another. Its the dog owners & their failure to keep their animals. I'm also anti "breed specific legislation".
As for Henry Martin ?
G'day mate! Hope your well. I wish we had a bloke as keen as you down here!
