Fawn Can't Walk/Stay On His Feet

We have a fawn that is about 2 1/2 weeks old, and yesterday I found him lying down in the corner, looking sickly. I picked him up and rubbed him on the neck, and when I set him back down, he stood for maybe a second, then stumbled and fell. I am wondering what this could be, and how to treat him. Thank you.

Many things could be going on and without hands on sometimes difficult. But what is the temp? Pick up the skin between the shoulders like a momma cat would carry her young and see how quick the skin returns back to normal Place- checking hydration. If prolonged- likely 5-10% dehydratEd. may likely be weak as well. Honey or kayro corn syrup can be tried at 3 cc by mouth two to three times a day to get blood glucose levels elevated. Best to try to find a vet to help out especially with subcutaneous fluid therapy(under the skin). Be careful if tubing w warm replacer as not to get milk into the lungs. Holler if u have more questions. [email protected]. Good luck. God bless

Thank you very much for the input, drjoe. I just got home from work, actually. When I got there I checked on him and all he seemed to do was go over in a corner and lie down. I am not sure of the temperature, perhaps I should call my boss tonight yet and ask him to check it out.

Anyway, we brought him in so he could warm up and he took almost 2 ounces of replacer milk. What we did was we gave him 0.5 cc of Banamine, then gave him some Clostridium A vaccine and Clostridium C & D vaccine.

He seemed to at least be able to keep his feet better a while before I left. Hopefully that works out for him, I mean we have done pretty much all we can think of for him.

I had the same problem in 95 degree heat. My vet says white muscle? Lack of selenium. He advised me to one half cc of bo se under the skin when the fawn are born. I lost the four fawns that showed these signs:(

Brad, I'm sorry about your fawns :( Unfortunately, white muscle is what my boss inferred while we were taking a look at him yesterday :( Unfortunately, there is not much you can do when you have a fawn with white muscle disease. We've done everything we can for this fawn, so all we can do is hope it isn't as serious as it seems and hope we can take care of him.

I will be over there at 3 today, so I will go take a look at him as soon as I get there. I hope he sticks around, I would hate to lose him, he's a real nice fawn. He has a double throat patch!

Wish us luck! Thanks for the input.

Be careful with banamine in dehydrated, weak fawns.. Can cause kidney damage and ulcerate the intestine.. usually 1 time dosage and 0.1 cc im is much safer.. Good luck!!!

BoSe or MuSe injections are the treatment of choice for Selenium Deficiency (white muscle Dz)

Yeah, we are done with the banamine. Last night we gave him a 1/4 cc of BoSe. We also gave him 4 oz. of electrolyte mix in a bottle. We are almost certain that it is white muscle. We are trying to do everything we can for him.

Bad news. Mr. 63 Buck, the cute little Buck fawn with the double throat patch, died in my bosses arms last night shortly after I left. White muscle disease was probably the killer. Very disappointed about losing that fawn, he was a cute little bugger. We did everything we could for him, but I guess there isn't much you can do with white muscle. :(
