My buck fawn who is 9 weeks old got scared this evening and banged the fence. Now he will not eat and backs up until he bumps into the fence. He acts like he is having trouble seeing. His eyes look normal but he has some scratches on his head. What would cause him to walk backwards and what should i do for him?

maybe a mild concussion? poor baby....i would keep him as calm and closely confined as possible and see how he is in the morning..if his vision is messed up he may back up because he cant see clearly. my guy is about the same age and did the fence thing a few weeks ago. he got scratched up a little and was skitttish of his pen for a few days afterwards.

His body had depleted its supply of thiamine, walking or dragging his front legs as he goes backwards is a common symptom. Check for proper dosage on your bottle of Thiamine or call your vet. He needs it asap. We had a similar thing happen to one of our fawns a few years ago, fixed him right up.

Would that be the case if it happened instantly? This happened as soon as he hit the fence. I was petting him 1 minute before it happened and he was fine.

I am not sure about that. All I know is when a deer has a head or neck injury their thaimine goes right to that injury to heal it. Causing a thiamine deficienty in their bodies. That is what often causes them to act woozy and our vet is the one that told us about them dragging themselves backward being a symptom of a thaimine deficiency. That is how we treated ours and he was back to his old self within a day. Sorry about not getting back to you last night I signed off shortly after writing that. Call me I you like

Thanks for the help. Today he is much better, eating normal and has most of his vision back. No more walking backwards or backing up against the fence.

I gave him some banamine. I felt sure it was caused by the lick he took. He seems fine now. If I had thiamine I would have given it to him also.
