How many times do all of you split your straws and what are your success rates? We will be AIing October 26 so it is time to decide who gets bred to what. Has anyone had any success spitting a straw 4 ways?

Mark,

Last year we AI'd 2 does with 1 straw. Come May 7th and 8th between those 2 does we had 4 fawns and all 4 are still healthy. We AI'd 3 does total the 3rd did not take. All 3 were yearling does.

Hope this helps.

I know 2 different farms that split a straw...................8 ways! and all 8 on both farms!

I WOULD NOT reccomend it but you asked! 2 to 3 is the norm

We've found it really just depends on the quality of the semen used. If the counts are really high you can sometimes get away with splitting straws 4 ways. We generally split straws 2-3 ways and Lap AI around 70-80 does a year around mid-November. Typically we see around 75% which I believe is about the average here in Tx due to heat and other factors

I am curious if anyone has had better conception rates with fewer straw splits (splitting 2 ways vs. 3 or 4 ways)?

its all is going to be depend on the concentration of your straw and the motility

if you know if somebody that is already used semen out of the same collection

they might be able to give you a good idea of how the semen looked otherwise you should have a plan B in case the semen and doesn't look as good as you planned..

if you already have plan B in mind usually you will not need to use it, its when you don't you will get caught off guard

I would say if you have a straw that is packed as it should be and has good motility, you can about always split it 3 ways lap

This year I ttied something different. I only split straws one time. I hit 14/14..only way I will do it from now on..
