going to vaccinate newborn fawns I always give 1/2cc of bose and fawn paste my question is how much covexen 8 and how much c&d anti should I be giving?

This is what we give fawns in the first 24-48 hrs after birth works good for us

VIT.E A AND D ¾ CC

VIT. B COMP 2 CC

CLOSTRIDIA ANTI ¾ CC

great question. I am trying to figure this same thing out. I have my first fawns coming in a couple weeks. Ive done as much reading as I can.

right now i have this planned.

1 cc Covexin 8

1 cc Type A (Clostridium)

Fawn and Deer paste (pbs animal health)

I am also considering a Poly serum. But not sure how many shots I want to give a newborn??

Picked my meds up today. This is what I will be doing.Vision 7 with spur 2.5cc sq, Bovi Sera Serum that replaced poly serum 6cc sq,Tetanus Toxid 1cc sq, Bo-se 1cc sq, Bar-guard 99 1 swallow. The Covexin 8 will only be given to my bottle fed fawns at 2 weeks 2.5cc sq. For what its worth.

Just for a little different perspective.... our fawns get no vaccinations and our fawn mortality rate over the past 7 years has been extremely low... knock on wood.

Same here. They get nothing unless they get loose!

My fawns get nothing until October. When I run my does in for cdrs,I vaccinate my does and then vaccinate the fawns too.heard from a good source fawns don't absorb much of the stuff if any at 2 days old. I've had good results so far.no illnesses yet from anything born on my farm, going on 5 years with this system. To each his own tho.

Covexin 8 is a toxiod, So I would not give that with the antitoxin, I would just give the anti toxin incase they have the bug now. Maybe some others can give an opinion on the matter, but all I know is that I once gave 1 and a quarter cc of covexin 8 to a new born and she was dead 6 hours later (coincidence? or did I kill her by giving the covexin 8?, I 'll never truly know). That was the moment in that fawning season I decided I would not give another Vaccination to a new born. I have since vaccinated when the weather is fowl. If the weather is good, I don't worry about it. But my understanding is If you give the toxid and the anti toxin, they may cancel each other out and both be ineffective. Don't hold me to it, but that is my opinion. Maybe others give covexin 8 with no trouble.

Mike, Do you vaccinate the does?

No. When i first started i threw the meds at them and had bad results so i just stopped. I have never had a problem with a deer born on my farm. I have had a couple brought in that i have had to treat for worms and a couple runny noses but no major problems.

I have alot of room for the numbers of deer i have and rotate pastures alot with lime and new seeding. I also believe this far north we do not get any of the problems some get in warmer areas!

hmm, interesting.

Like a said I am a rookie at raising fawns. Ive been to a few siminars and just tried to collect data from what ive heard and read. But it is nice to hear from others what works for you.

I just want to do what is right for the animals and try to keep them as healthy as possible.

Sometimes i think people throw a little to much at them. If you play good animal husbandry you will be on the right track. I also believe us in the cooler part of the world do not get some of the issues others in the warm states get!
