There was a vet in IA that died years back from an accidental injection of Telazol. I have had my mouth go numb from having a new dart in my mouth while making multiple shots. I take this stuff pretty seriously. Hope everyone else does, too.

Things my vet has said to me regarding telazol, xylazene, micotil, and many other drugs that we handle on a regular basis - and tend to get too comfortable with:

Anesthesia is controlled euthenasia.

Decimal points kill - measure exactly every time.

Find something else to be 10' tall and bullet proof about.

So, as much as we don't want to hear it, we are not invincible. We are being trusted by the vets that supply us with these drugs to act responsibly. They are putting their license on the line for us, the least we can do is follow some simple safety procedures.

Think of the ramifications to our industry if a few careless mistakes started causing vets to not be able to provide our meds and we had to start paying them to do all of the work that we do ourselves???? Nightmare!

I found this info in the 2008 fall NADEFA mag. page 29

XYLAZINE(Rompum) Extremely Toxic to humans Causes severe respiratory depression. Seek medical attention immediately. Do not use whitetail reversal agent on yourself.

Recovery is expected if you can be maintained on a mechanical ventilator until drug wears off.

KETAMINE Not as toxic as xylazine. The main danger to humans is seizures and self mutilizations from hallucinogenic effects

TELAZOL is a combination of two drugs. Side affects can be similar to ketamine. Treatment will consist of basic life support until drug has worn off.

Some people have different reactions to drugs. Just because you didn't have a bad reaction doesn't mean that the next person won't. These are serious drugs.

I would rather look like a fool in the E.R. than to be a fool in a casket.

Yeah the more I read this post the more it should really be take more seriously....I know the jokes were meant in no harm and those that made them know how serious the drugs are but maybe someone out there doesn't and we need to be careful as how we portray these deadly medicines to others.......the different drugs are very......very FATAL to humans and should not be treated lightly.....i fact after reading this I always had my dangerous drugs out of reach of my child but i am now going to make sure there not only out of reach but locked up!! Make sure you know what drugs you are using and know if they are deadly or not!! Please be careful guys and girls.......we love our deer farmig but it's not worth losing your life over!!

In my state, we have to be certified by the veterinary board to use and possess the common drugs used in chemical capture. Additionally, we are inspected randomly by the DEA and those folks have zero tolerance. Our drugs must be under double lock at all times and we have to record the amounts we use and return the empty vials before we are allowed to get replacement drugs. Sounds like a hassle, but it really isn't. The reason for all of this is that not only can they be harmful, some of the drugs we use are considered "date-rape" drugs and they need to be controlled to prevent them from getting out into the public.
