I found a baby deer that was nothing but a bag of skin and bones. I have been bottle feeding him for a week and have him on antibotics. He now has reached about 7 lbs and seems to be doing much better.

I am now left with the question, what do I do with him? He has bonded with people and is not abel to be released into the wild.

Why is he so small for this late in the season?

If I castrate him, would he grow antlers?

Could be be happy living in my yard? I do have 4 waterfalls, 2 ponds, 60 quakies and lots of pines. It is also fully fenced with 6 foot vinyl.

Will be stay in the yard or most likely jump out?

Sorry for fifty questions but I am just trying to find the best soltion for him...

Thanks in advance.....

Connie the best thing for you to do is search for a rehabber in your state....they will take care of him the rest of the way and then either turn him into the wild or find a good place for him to live out his life......while i think it is honorable to do what you have done with him it is probably not legal to do in your state....at least it is not legal to take in a wild animal without the proper license here in PA......but again.....look up a wildlife rehabber in your State and they can take over the reins for you....good luck!!

Dennis,

Thank you, Unfortunately, I tried this route and there are none in the valley. I looked into this myself and there is not even anyone with 50 miles so I could do the two year training. DWR said if he cant be safely returned to the wild in 90 days, they put them down as would a rehabber (it's a requirement).... At 7lbs, I can't see he would be ready for that.... I do not want him put down.....

Do they grow antlers in castrated?

Do they still go into the rut?

Great news....

I have found an organization that is willing to give him a safe and wonderful home.

Thank you Dennis for knocking some sense into me.....

Connie........that is awesome and ...you can can still be proud that you gave him a future........awesome news........I am happy for you and the little guy!
