Just Devastated

If you were double fenced, they could live in the alley way with no problem. Mine lives in the run between my two pens but then goes in with the deer everyday when I feed them. You put them in as pups and the deer get used to them, even when they are barking, which they do a lot of. You could put them right in the pens with the deer as well, but I've read you shouldn't put them in with the deer until they are 1 year old and mine is 11 months. They are wonderful dogs. Another deer farmer and I purchased ours from two different breeders last year. If they both do well as deer dogs, we are going to breed them. I know we each want another one because they do better in pairs because they take turns patrolling the pens. Here is a picture of mine eating the deer's food!

we put ours in the alley works great. then when we are back there we let her out and watch out she is off to the races she will run for 1/2 hr around the all the pens checking and smelling. we have a male and female  had to separate until older together when we let them out they would run to the next county. the deer are hers now great watch dog. kept her at neighbors 1/2 mile away (down wind) for the cold snap (not nessary they love the cold ) but she broke out of neighbors barn and ran back to her deer. you will not go wrong just plan on raising a small horse they are huge. and yes start them out as a pup if not use to deer and deer not use to dog.

i have a hunting farm coyotes and domestic dogs dig in all the time trying to kill my babies i know the feeling when you find them dead and eating on it pisses you off but they are next to impossible to stop tried snares no luck my best thing that worked was hot dogs soaked in antifreeze thrown outside fence that slows them down but does not always kill them good luck with the dogs sometimes they are harder to stop than coyotes i have lost several thousand dollars over only nine years there will always be death where there is life but most of them make it i hate loosing deer period jm2cw

Ezra, Soo sorry to here about your loss. I also have my dogs living right next to my deer pen so they get used to dogs and barking. It's been my experience that anything "new" will create the whitetail flee reaction. The worst fence crashing episode I ever had was when one of my buddies brought a friend over and he just headed right over to the pen talking loud, moving fast and WITHOUT ME, they freaked out and a couple bounced off the fence. Luckily none got hurt. Even bottle feds will crash the fence if something new spooks them. The bad thing about when they do run, the dogs natural chase instinct also kicks in and doesn't stop until the deer stop moving.

Ezra..sorry for your loss dude. dogs are a tough one...Bright side is at least they didn't get IN the pen so you did something right !!! As was said above already deer go nuts when ANYTHING is different..they spook darn easy and will flee. I had to "remove" a dog from our farm a few weeks ago. He wasn't running or barking just walking around. BUT the deer were going nuts. Once a dog knows they are there they will return again and again. You have a gun? It's a tough one BUT i'd rather a neighbors dog get "lost" than watch my deer get lost or hurt

I have no problem taking care of a pet someone else won't! I also don't have a problem with SSS like I said it will take some time some bait some traps and some ammunition but our township will have less dogs by the time we build our new pens and layout this spring and summer! I'll be sure to keep everyone updated on the count!

I know exactly what you are feeling. My husband and I just got into the deer farming last may. Bottle fed our first doe and she lived in the house with us and all but slept with us. we lost her to pneumonia when she was 4 months old. I felt like someone ripped my heart out. took me months to just stop crying. we did everything we could to try to save her . when you bottle feed they are like your own child. I still cry some days but we still have our little buck and got him 2 more girlfriends when our Ivory died. he is still my baby. I had to pray a lot to get my self to come to peace with her dying. she was such a sweetheart and I will always have her in my heart more than any pet I have ever had!! Just know you are not alone in this.

I had a 1.5 month old buck that I was bottle feeding, he broke his leg above the knee my vet said it was right were the growing point of the bone takes place. Anyway we decided to put him down, I held him the vet injected and instantly I could feel the life drain out of him... I cried like a new born and the whole time I kept saying that I was sorry to the little guy... The vet later told me that it was alright to cry because it meant that I had a good heart! Still tears me up.... Ten years later. Charlie

Ezra, sorry to hear what happened to your little girls.I know what your going through. We just lost our favorite girl a few weeks ago. Felt like I got stabbed right through the heart. Keep looking up and know God is in control. I want you to have a doe fawn from my farm in late June/July. No charge. All you have to do is come and get her, feed her and love her. I'm from Plain City, Ohio.  I can get ahold of you closer to that time.

I'm glad you took care of the dog, now hurry up and get done with everything, we want you back as a deer farmer, lol. It was nice having you around the forums. Good luck with getting everything prepared, I hope it goes much better for you the second time around

Its seems we have to go above and beyond to protect or livestock anymore!! Between the dogs and black bears Im always on guard.  Some People move to the country and feel there dogs are entitled to run free. Very sad society we live in. Very sorry for your loss!
