Just wanting to know

Good morning everyone, I was just curious aside from playing with our deer, what does everyone do for a living? I had thought it would be nice to do business with people whom you already know and trust. Feel free to chime in. So I guess I will start things off, I currently broker freight. I handle full loads, and LTL shipments.

Hey Johnny B, Good morning where you are, and good evening from where I currently am. This seems like a nice friendly type of discussion and your job caught my eye.

Years back I used to drive truck both short haul and long haul. I was based out of the state of WI and I think I almost hit every state in the U.S. and also a portion of Canada. At various times I worked for a small operator called Fisher's, then was a driver trainer for Roehl Transport, and then a company called Road Ready Transfer.

I then quit driving and took to another type of transportation. For a while I hauled people and when I pretty much had my fill of that I went back to hauling cargo. Only now instead of gross loads of 80,000 LBS I have gross loads of 870,000 LBS. I also extended my range beyond the borders of the U.S. and Canada, and I burn a slightly different kind of fuel.

While you all back in the U.S. were sleeping last night I moved a load from Germany to the Middle East and now am taking a little break here. And in about 16 hours or so I will be heading to my next stop in Hong Kong.

I contract raise pigs for Cargill. I've been in the swine industry for almost 15 years, the last 11 as a contractor, paying my own employees to operate someone else's farm. We currently run about 3800 females, breed 100% AI, and consistently ship between 2050 and 2150 pigs per week, the youngest being 19 days old. I have been paid for more than 950,000 pigs so far, expecting to hit 1M in April. I would much rather spend all the time with the deer! Raising pigs is easy, but getting people to do what you want without all the drama, now that's a job!

I'm a robotics engineer. I contract myself out mostly to the big auto makers, but do a lot of little robot jobs for suppliers and such.



One thing I'm working on in my spare time is a robotic water jet butchering system. It should be pretty cool to process a hog, beef or deer in about 75 seconds!

I am fortunate enough to say that i have retired from a life of contracting and now work in the deer industry full time. I have been a life long entrepreneur. I had early success but have struggled the past couple of years to strike gold again so to speak. I have always enjoyed raising whitetails but never looked to make a living out of it. I found myself trying to market my own animals. Creating designs and marketing material as i had done for all my other businesses. Some of my fellow deer farmers saw my work and ask for me to help them create and design a marketing plan for there herd. Thus Per4mance Whitetail Designs was born.



Since then we have helped hundreds of deer farmers with creative marketing designs. Started up Buckstocker.com a new online deer auction. We have grown our herd and genetics at The Circle J Ranch Whitetails. But besides being full time in the deer industry there is something more i get to do. That is be a full time DAD and Husband!!! Me and my family work our small farm. I get teach my kids the lessons of life versus a payed sitter or some delinquent from school. I get to be there for the misses so she does not have to eat another meal alone.



I am truly blessed to be able to work in this industry full time. Its has given me a life that with out it i probably would have missed.

I am a sales person for a telcom supply company, been doing this for 25yrs, have survived many aquisitions etc... We started in deer farming in 2006



Wish I could be deer farming full time but in todays market that would not be a wise choice, maybe some day, but it is a great time to purchase great animals, price on a great animal is lower than it has been in several years.

I am a automotive mechanic. 25 plus years of turning wrenches. We are the guy's you pay almost as much as you pay a dr!!! See you don't like me already.lol.. I am in partnership in a small service station 10 minutes from home. That sure does make it nice when the bottle babbies hit the ground. Talk about a job that shows evolution..All in one day your working with points,plugs and gas and next your working with a battery that is powerfull enough to fry you to the floor!!If you touch the wrong wire!! I do like this post also!!! We come up with all these fancy words for what we do and at the end of the day we can be explained in a couple words.

I'm a firefighter for ten years. We also have a deer processing operation during season. I did taxidermy for twelve years but the deer business has allowed me to quit that. I have recently started helping Shane Horrocks with maxrax feed and c&e wildlife products. Lots of jobs but I like busy!

I work for my in dad in a meat processing plant, where we just got through with another busy deer season in Missouri. We also slaughter beef, hogs, and lambs and have a meat deli and serve hot foods also. Were not a big plant but it pays the bills. This is a very interesting topic, I love the deer buisness. We just started all over with better genetics and ALOT less deer (which makes feed bill a lot less and hopefully bigger bucks and more marketable does).

I am an Anesthesia Tecnician in an operating room. I assist with anything from a carpal tunnel procedure to open heart surgery. Like mama always said wear clean underwear. Oh yea and don't forget to clean out your bellybutton. You would not believe the things I see I am also a firefighter and EMT. And proud mother of a 5 year old boy

I owned and operated a consrtuction company in my town for 25+ years. I currently raise deer for a living! I have deffinately seen and felt the current down swing in the economy and it's effects on this business. I bottle feed fawns and board deer for several individuals. We have completed several "steps" in the progression of our original goal and that was and is to produce consistant qaulity.......shooter bucks and offspring that can and will do this. I have not wavered from my goals for this to be my "day job"!!!!!!!!!

Roger, I am in Grand Rapids, MI. I work for a brokerage that is out of Punta Gorda, FL. 90% of my business is full load and LTL freight. My company does do rail car loads also. I was pretty excited this last week as I just brokered my first rail load. Roger, are you flying?

Reading this thread kinda feels like one of those AA meetings you see on TV were we all intoduce ourselves aspart of our recovery program! LOL

Wicked whitetails, I took four years of CAD. I really enjoyed that, occasionally I find myself making mechanical drawings just b/c I like using a pencil and straight edge.
