Maggots in velvet

Please help! About two hours ago, we went out to look at our deer and saw one of our bucks stumbling around as he tried to run. His velvet has started to come off , and it's pretty hard. He's very tame and when we went up to look at him, we noticed maggots inbetween the velvet and the antlers. So, we tranquilized him, cut off his antlers (three inches from the base of the head) and gave him 4cc of LA 200 (antibiotic). Blood spurted from the antler stubs...so we put some wound stopper dust on them and then rubbed the areas with kerosene to keep flies away. Then, we gave him some reversal...and about an hour ago...he was raising his head up. We're not sure what's happened or what to do next. Have any of you experienced anything like this, and if so, what you did about it? His temperature is 99.9. Thank you!!

I just tried this, but there were no results. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Thank you! Saw it! And, watched the video. Wish we would have seen this beforehand. Hopefully, our buck will be OK. We'll be carefully watching him the next week. I can't tell you how much we appreciate you responding so fast to our concern!

According to what I can read you should not use the Micotil since you gave him LA 200. It would kill him. I am no expert but it is nice to have people on here that are and they freely share their knowledge!

Good Luck with your buck.

It sounds like the infection has already spread into his body by the way he was acting. I usually give around 8-10 cc of nuflor, 3-4 cc bananine, 3cc b-12. Clean all maggots off and spray with blu kote. I hit it heavy because that's the only way I've been able to save em once it's spreads into brain cavity. Just my 2 cents

Rusty, don't be afraid to use more antibiotic when you have tranq'd a deer. We will give 8-10 cc's or even more depending on the health of the deer. In your case since he was wobbly, I would have hit him with tetradure or Draxxin so it would stay in his system longer and provide protection longer. We also always give Banamine, Vit B complex and wormer when we have sedated a deer. You need to watch him closely for the next 2 weeks as he will be suseptible to pneumonia for that long. If you see droopy ears or other signs that he is sick, do not wait, get some Draxxin in him and if that doesn't help, you need to consider Micotil. If you use Micotil, consult your Vet before using it. Good luck.

I agree you need to give more anyibiotics next time you put him down. Plus the wormer vitamin b and I also like to give a little Bose it has vitamin E and selenium seems to give them a little boost of energy.

Thank you so much for all of your answers. I just wanted to tell you that I contacted my vet today and here's the information he gave me. He told me to tranquilize the buck with 2cc of Rumpum, then give him 3cc of Banamine, 3 cc of B-12, 9 cc of Tetradure and then 2 cc of reversal. So...that's what I did. Now, he's up walking around and eating. This forum is a Godsend! Don't know what we'd do without it! I'll also keep watching him like Steve and Carolyn said to...and give Draxxin if I need to.

A BIG thank you for all of your help! So far, our buck is doing very well. It's great to have people like you on this forum!

That is fantastic news deerlover, thank you for the update, there are some great people on this forum.

This can and does have a different outcome for many farms every year ! Glad it worked for you....But never delay treatment if you see anything like this. The infection from the magotts can be pure poision for bucks! Again glad it worked out for you! best of luck

Just wanted to say we had a similar problem last week but not with maggots, our problem was puss and infection under the velvet.

Wayne Scott, his son, Solomon Ropp, and their driver had come to the Ohio sale last week, and i was telling them about my problem, they all said lets go take care of it, we cut his horns treated him and today he is with a new owner......Thank you guys for your help and willingness to help another farmer, I appreciate you guys.....
