Missouri Venison Market

Does anyone in Missouri sell venison (whitetail)? I posted some thoughts on it in a different thread, but thought it deserved having one of its own. I have been told that MO farmers cannot legally sell venison. I've also been told that it is legal if the animal is killed at a USDA slaughter house. My own agent says absolutely NOT but then I see elk meat for sale on highway 36. Now we have switched to an Ag state...will there be some changes or clarification? I intend to bring it up if our state lobbyist is in attendance this weekend in Jeff City. With the market going like it is, we're going to have to do something different. It is time to think outside the box! Other farmers have told me to just sell shooters and knock the doe fawns in the heads. Those are the stories that give us all a bad name. Personally, I couldn't do it just to manage my buck:doe ratio, and besides, if I'm doing a good job in improving genetics, the older does are the ones that need to go. If you have suggestions or ideas, please post!

I've told my husband that if we ever have to kill the doe fawns as they are born we will not raise whitetails anymore.....done! It is wrong and I won't do it.

It's a shame that good shooter buck producing does have to be slaughtered because there "isn't" a market for them.

its not a lot of money and won't even pay for the feed you have in them but most Hunting Ranches will pay $100 to $150 per head for them.

Randy i agree with you. phillip your best bet is to just take the small amount preserves will pay you and dont worry about it. The does will make you money the years they are with you if they have good fawns, so in a few years just sell the older does to a preserve dirt cheap to move them out and let their daughters, or better does from another line, fill their place in producing the babies. I think the best bet you have as far as selling meat is just to let your hunting buddies know you have some good venison that needs a home and ask them for a small fee, drop the deer, take your cwd samples, then send it home with them. That way you stay out of trouble. thats just my opinion being that there really isnt a huge market in the meat industry.
