Hello everyone, I am very new to this site so any help would be appreciated. A mother whitetail was hit by a car and it had a fawn with her. Neighbor brought the fawn to me and I have been feeding her for 24hrs. Every 2 hours shes eating 6-9 oz and I am massaging her back end to stimulate her to urinate and defecate. I worked on a dairy farm for 11 years and raised goats, pigs and calves. So I am not completely blindsided jumping into this. She hasn't had a bowel movement yet and I am giving her fresh cows milk from the local farmer. She is inside my house at the moment. I am just looking for pointers and any help would be appreciated. I have a love for animals so i just couldn't just let it go without a mother. She still has her umbilical cord and is starting not to wobble at all and is getting steady on her feet. I am just nervous if I am doing all the right things. Thanks for you time Jill

How often do they have a bowel movement? Ok I will try a warm wash cloth thank so much! Am I doing everything right so far?

Jill you may want to go get some probiotic paste, That should help, also you should stimulate everytime you feed, like daywood said warm cloth works great, It should be making a bm by now. Good Luck!!!!

They don't have a bm everytime. You should be getting a pee everytime and at least one bm a day. You might want to get some iodine on that umbilical cord. Helps it to dry up and keeps the chance of infection down. If it is real young as it sounds it might be you might want to try feeding it about every 4 hours are so. Have fresh dirt available for it to eat at all times. Probiotic in the milk is good and don't over feed. Good luck

We had success with the BM wahoo! Thanks everyone, the warm wash cloth did the job. Buckskin thanks for the info on the dirt.

I contacted the local DEC and they have come to pick the deer up and said it will most likely be taken to a rehab place. :( It is for the best for the deer. I would love to be able to do this as a career though so definately looking into something along the lines of a VEt Tech! Thanks Everyone for your help and good luck with your lil babies this year.

Ok just found out that a woman from the wild like refuge is going to list my husband as an assistant to her license. So we are looking forward to raising this lil booger! Thanks again for all your help and support, I am sure this won't be the last time I am on here. The lady said it would of been a hefty fine if we were caught and possible jail time. So thanks again for telling me everything. This site is amazing!!!!:)

"Fawn care guidelines"

I have milk goats, so I tend to bottlefeed everything goats milk. I raise bottle calves every year- right on my goats. Goat hops on the milk stand, calf drinks his fill.

Goat's milk, goat's milk, goat's milk... next to mamma's milk, there's nothing better for a fawn. the proof is in the poop.

Ok Thanks again! I was wondering how old she is, she was up running around and playing with me and my son this morning. She reminded me of a calf playing. She loves eating the dirt and blowing bubbles in her water. He poop is still orange and somewhat formed but still soft. She has grown like a weed in the past couple of days. She takes about 8-12 oz a feeding and I feed her at 7a, 12p,5p and 11p. I am kind of going with the flow with that because she will stay consistent for a few days then boom she wants to increase the amount of milk. I am going to try and figure out how to get a picture on here. Thanks again everyone!!!:)
