Dennis, First I didn't jump down anyones throat. When you have a sick deer, I suggest treating with Draxxin. It will not hurt anything and then you can get all the samples of whatever you guys take to vets. I don't take samples to vets for various reasons. Check for worms: well heck its cheaper to worm the deer. Check for whatever, well heck I never seen a disease identified in time to save them anyway, unless it was worms.(not really) I am sure there are many out there somewhere, but I haven't located any vets that know more about deer than I do. Not that I know much, I don't think anyone knows to much about deer. Maybe you give me the phone number of the smart deer vets in Pa. and I will have the other vets there call those person's instead of me for treatment of sick deer.----Scott------ I think the Draxxin or oxytetracycline's somehow make the blood coagulate quick and stops the leaking out as fast into the various areas of the body. Holding the blood in allows them to recover. To much loss of blood into their system cuts off the amount of oxygen being carried through their muscles and organs. Their comes a certain point that the oxygen level gets so low that they collapse. Everything shuts down from the lack of oxygen including their lungs and heart. The reason they get pneumonia is from the blood leaking into their lungs. Bluetongue is totally different in how it acts. I feel like bluetongue swells up their throat and tongue, which makes getting enough oxygen to eliminate overheating very hard. This is where heat becomes a factor. If it is very hot the deer will overheat quicker. I have saved some that were hyperventilating, by inserting a goat tuber into the rectom and squirting cool water into them. A deer cools from the inside out and it takes forever to cool them by putting cool water on the outside.(I learned this from Billy Sage and he learned it from Brad Lewis)(Just want to make sure everyone gets credit) Anyway, I wish I knew why some things work when it doesn't make any sense. In all reality we just do what we have leaned on our own, or the expeirence of others. I'll take the expeirence of farmers over vets in any animal any day. Well, I'll take expeirence over education in all fields. Good luck to all. Hope your deer does well Snyder. I think I'll take a break from here now that I am healthy again. I got in enough trouble for the short time I visited.

There 'aint no doubt you know deer, Tim. Who called you more than anyone in the USA when she first started raising deer 8 or so years ago.... yup, it was me

I used to call you if a hair was out of line on any of mine always wanting to make sure everything was PERFECT :) You were always so kind.... tell me the truth though, did you get sick of me calling????

Anyhow, thanks for all that I learned from you!

Tim,

I too have practiced the cool water enema to reduce body temperatures. I learned of its effects many years ago when I first began tranquilizing here in the deep south. There may be some validity to your theories pertaining to the Draxxin or oxytetracycline's somehow making the blood coagulate quicker. The fact that we save some of these EHD infected animals is a testimony in itself to our ability to push the envelope and defy the nay-saying veterinarians that have close-minded opinions about some of our methods.

I feel a song coming on...........I could cure the common cold if you let me, but a broken antler is impossible to mend..........you can finish the lyrics and write the chorus, but don't forget mama, drinking, jail and trains........ha ha

OK Scott - I started. So how bout you finish:

Broken antlers ain’t got no fix

Scours can be cured with a little mix

Pepto is great for man and deer

So don’t have no fear

We could cure the common cold if one would heed

We always help those in need

DEER FARMERS – DEER FARMERS – we are a breed apart

With bleeding hearts.

Boy Boy, John you gonna need a lot of work. Now Scott sounds like he got some potential. I sure got some funny stuff but it is too risky for the farm forum.
