Dundee, Oh
I just heard from one of the WDFO board members that the bill to switch Ohio deer farms to the Dept of Ag has successfully passed. Congratulations and Thank You to all the Ohio board members for thier hard work on this project.

Deer Whisperer, get a hold of your Sen I think it should be Sen Tom Casperson. SB27 is setting on the Senate calendar for 2-3 months at 18 in line to be acted on. Everyone in Michigan should be contacting their Senator, then they will get message we are serious. The Pig ISO (Invasive Species Order) has this whole thing messed up. Anyway I keep the pressure up as much as I can. Alex

Thanx Alex,We also have Howard Walker in our 37 district who also stopped to see us for our vote while he was campaigning.

Trust me it is a good thing. While it is true that Whitetails are natural resources in most states, the deer we raise are not the state's natural resource. It makes much more sense to be under the agricultural heading where there are vets, not wildlife biologists. Generally there is less opposition to hunting ranches then as well.

I guess this is a good thing, I've had deer for 10 years in Ohio and never had a problem with the DNR.

Who would you rather have coming out to check your deer? A game warden armed with a pistol or a vet armed with a syringe and stethoscope?

Yup ya better be careful what you ask for. We have people in the ag dept that come to our farms to do and read tests that have not even been trained to do such tasks.Cattle maybe, Deer..Not so much. I believe there should be a federal rule that applies to all deer farms in all states. Tags, testing, number of deer per farm( Dumbest law ever made) Then the ag dept would not be clueless when it came to do permits and such.

In Ohio the Dept of Ag has been very supportive of deer farming all along while the Dnr has been trying their best to get tougher rules in place to discourage deer farms. We always have and always will deal with Ag on health issues etc. Why would we want to deal with 2 agencies when one can do the job?

I dont know about a good thing here, now I had to pay to transfer to dept of Ag by the end of dec. They sent me a nice peice of paper yesterday saying it was issued jan 15,2013, and would expire on march 31, 2013, wow... good for almost 2 months! They also sent a letter saying that they needed another fee to give me another useless peice of paper that will be good till the following march 2014, nice double dip method there!

Now tommarrow, the div. of wildlife is coming to do a pen inspection and collect a fee for prop permit again.....

All I have done now is pay more money to 2 gov agencies for nothing. Us little guys got screwed on this big time!! Now we have to pay a vet $200+ dollars every year to tell me how many deer I have. And then again pay them(vet and dept of ag) to send a head in for cwd testing, which is going to be more $$$$$. nice.....

I never had 1 issue with the div. of wildlife in 9 years I have had deer, now I have 2 agencies to deal with and they are standing there with thier hands out wanting money.

heck ya they are supportive to deer farming, look at the money they are making off us people.......they certainly want a peice of the money pie!

Your still dealing with 2 agencies, as you will still have to have a div of wildlife prop permit to have the deer, I am told its now a lifetime permit so why do I need the dept of ag now collecting money from me every year??

If these new rules/regulations encourage deer farming, I guess I went to a differnt school!

I would suggest you call one of the board of directors of the Whitetail Deer Farmers Of Ohio. They can explain it in more detail. After the new rules are fully in place we will be dealing only with the dept of ag. The only thing the div of wildlife will have any authority over is our fences.

I talked to the head of the vets@dept of ag. today, I fully understand whats been done to me and all Ohio deer farmers. The information I posted is 100% correct. You still will have a prop permit from the div of wildlife, and they will collect a comm.prop permit fee for this. They will come to your farm and inspect the fences, etc. this year, and youll be given a lifetime prop permit and they collect $40 more from you this year! So you still will be dealing with the div of wildlife for fencing and any complaints etc.

I will find out tommarrow when the game warden comes here what all powers they will have over me.

Our game warden even says this is a big mess and they dont know exactly what the div of wildlife and the dept of ag are each doing, of course this is all at my expense, just keep writing checks for fees for lic, fees for vets, and fees to vets and dept of ag for testing of cwd/head sent in if I want to put one in the freezer.

I will update this after I have my pen inspection tommarrow and show the game warden this dept of ags paperwork, as she told me she has not even seen it or had a chance to review it. Pretty interesting when neither dept knows what the other one is supposed to do fully.

I already know of 1 farmer who shot every deer he had.. he said no way was he gonna go thru all this. I doubt if I am far behind him.

according to the dept of ag, they have had a awfull alot of complaints and phone calls on this set up!

usda, get ready for more paper work and a hole lot of crap. screw up records inspections an phone calls.they will tell you all the things you all ready know.check deers ear tags, check height of fence tell you about deer movement an ***** about little things.i was under the game comm. over twenty years no problem.the last ten years with usda is a nite mare.we all thought usda was going to be a good thing here in pa.not so.my opion only.

Thats what I am afraid of Robert. When I had the head vet on the phone today at dept of ag, I told him they double dipped the lic fees, explained it like this: you buy your cars lic plates and stickers from the state, you dont then again buy a second lic plate and sticker from your county do you for the same vehical? ..no

He replied "well if you bought the tag and it was at the end of the year youd pay full price anyways". I said,"no" its prorated to the end of the year, not full price.... there was a moment of silence and he said, well ya, your right I guess we did double dip you guys then.

They issued me a permit dated jan 15,2013, and on the same permit expires march 31,2013, just got it yesterday- feb 13 2013....LOL!

I have had deer 9 yrs, not 1 problem with div of wildlife in all those years. It cost me $40 a year for the comm prop permit. At this moment its now $40 for div of wildlife prop permit again, $25 to the ag for 2 mos, another $25 for ag lic till next march, then $200+ for a vet to come count my deer for a pen inspection, thats $290+ to get going this year vs $40.....these guys say its a good thing.

Well guy we are about ten years ahead of you guys here in Montana with laws and fees. Guess what when the Dept of Livestock starts to charge fees soon enough you'll be like Montana with a 32.00 a head tax from the Dept of Livestock per animal. Ten years ago we were at 2.00 a head tax. Heck just quite crying it's going to get worse I'll guarantee it.
