Our profit comes from raising fawns with potential to reach 190-230 inches. Our fawns are sold at 1-1/2 yr old (their first antlers) to those who want to enhance their genetics. Since we do not keep the bucks very long, our cost (feed and maintenance) is reduced and the mortality issues associated with keeping bucks 3 yrs or more does not play into the equasion. Our approach is the less you put into them, the more profit you will realize. Have we sold some fawns that would have brought a "premium" price at age 3? Yep, and we have no regrets, because the purchasers of those deer that turned out to be outstanding 3yr olds, are our most loyal customers now. This is another avenue to consider.
