I am needing some prices of what you guys would charge to keep my deer at your farm? I'm talking about 35 to 60 deer. I'm looking for a price per day per deer. These are deer that I own and did not buy from you. If I were to call you tomorrow and you had the room what would the price per day be. Please take the time to answer even if you don't have the room I need it for a court case for a good friend.

Thanks

Derek

I would probably charge about $2 per deer per day. I know just the feed and hay costs more than $1 a day. It would not be worth it to take care of that many deer for any less for me.

We have some deer on our farm that belong to someone else and we charge $2.00 per day plus any meds that may be needed. The feed and hay are just over $1.00 and if my time isn't worth something well then?

I have some up north and they charge me $550.00 per year per deer.

I would do it for 500 a year as long as they paid extra for all meds and vet bills.

I don't really know what the cost per day would be for the feed, but like redcedar (Hi George) says the time has to be worth something as well.

The other thing everyone needs to keep in mind is pen space. As I see it every deer I house for someone is one less deer I can own myself and then profit from by having. You have the cost of having built the pens and the land taxes associated with that property as well. It is important to maximize your return from your investment.

We do house some deer for other folks here, but it is done on a case by case basis and is associated with the fact that they spent money with us. Also each deer is on a limited time frame as well. Such as live breedings or deer that have been purchased with an agreement that we house it for a certain period of time.

I always say that vet bills and medications are extra, but I find us eating the cost of most meds just because I hate to be nitpicky about those small costs. Vet bills are another issue though.

Every deer is treated here like it is our own. We spare no cost or effort to insure every deer is kept as safe and healthy as possible. That said any animal housed here is at owners risk.

All that said I don't think $2 per day is really enough.

I am just getting into raising deer if you would pay for the materials to build my pen and get my permit i will let you put them on my propety for a year. Then after the first year id do it for $2 a day per deer plus meds and vet. That way it will help us both out.

I've always said $50 per deer per month for general feed and care. Any vet call or out of the ordinary meds would be extra.

Adgistment on deer is not common, but if deer are adgisted its usually about $2 a week.

We would charge/recieve/pay about $3 a week for a cow,so $2 a deer is pretty good money.

What is the adgistment on a cow there per week ?

Cheers Sharkey

Sounds to me that we need to send our deer out to be boarded. Our cost per deer a month is around $ 55.00/ head. This includes feed, hay, water and insect control systems. Two dollars a day??? I would be around long with prices like that.

Avg. feed intake. 4-5 lbs/ day = 120-150 lbs/ month= $11.50/ sack =$34.50

Water & hay $12.00/ month

Insecticide cost= 150.00/ month ( all pens) $ 7.50 / pen avg

Doesn't leave much for my time and efforts now does it!!!

Can whitetail eat grass & pasture?

Cheers Sharkey

A lot of farms only have pens in the woods and need to feed their deer hay year around Sharkey......this is my thoughts........

Sharkey - Whitetails will eat grass if they ''have to''. I personally don't think it's EVER preferred by them, especially in a significant amount.

When I've fed alfalfa hay with grass in it...they WILL NOT touch the grass. Whenever I come across a grassy bale or part thereof, I won't even bother to carry it in the pen...EVER!!

Bottom line here Sharkey, if whitetails are eating significant amounts of grass, it's because what they need/preferr/ and should have is not being made available to them. They're not grazers per se...whitetails are browsers.

This is been my experience in Northwest Illinois with whitetail deer. Deer and/or grass might be different somewhere else in the U.S., but likely not alot different, if at all.

'Cheers' to you Sharkey...Hope you're doing great!!!

Yeah I agree Mark......as long as there is clover in my pens the Whitetails are happy......grass not so much.......

I feed bales from our field, it is 75% alfalfa/25% timothy. The timothy always goes to waste, even in the winter. i would love to grow more alfalfa but our soil is poor and very acidic, we have so much money invested in lime and fertilizer each fall just to keep the 2 acres of alfalfa we have establised growing well, that it would be difficult to afford to do much more, and its a lot of work.

Derek, good question. I charge a guy that has bought deer and invested with me $400 year per deer. But I would have to agree with the concensus here of $2 day, pirces of $500 to $700, and with time the boarder spends taking care, isn't making much. My thoughts.
