now within the last week we have lost 6 deer. and of course all of my good ones. we are at a loss. some seem to be getting pneumonia that we cannot beat with nu-flor or excede. nothing seems to be helping. we have lost several deer too just out of nowhere. fine in the morning, few hours later almost dead. i can say i almost wish it was EHD so we atleast knew what it was. but my vet and Purdue have both said no signs of EHD. we have also sent off samples to michigan with no results back yet. we have cleaned and disinfected all water pans. pulled every weed out that could even make them think about being sick. and vaccinated for multiple things. has anyone ever had anyhting like this before? we are at a point of trying anything

Ben, very sorry to hear what you are going through. Even though you have heard from those people, I would still bet on EHD. I have heard from people who have been through EHD epidemics and they say rapid eye blinking can be one of the first signs. Take temps and if it is high, use ice bags and cold water enemas to cool them down. I have heard that the antibiotic Lincomycin along with Dex has helped some deer pull through. Again, sorry for your losses.

Ben, I am sorry as well.....I can't imagine how frustrating it must be......even though I have never experienced EHD I too think it just might be what your experiencing......as fast as the deer seem to be coming down with being ill and dying sure sound like EHD......I wish you the best........has there been other farms with EHD in your area...or have you heard about any animals in the wild being sick form it?

Ive had deer drop dead from EHD (with no signs )12 hrs after i have just noticed something wasn't right with them ,while in the same pen have a couple with ever sign of blue tongue/ehd(bent neck, foaming mouth ,light walking )all you can do is treat what deer you can and pray for the best some bounce back quick while others take months if they ever do exceed ,Dex,zactrin or draxion(zactrin is cheaper and seems to work faster )has worked for us

It sounds exactly like what ive been going through for the last two weeks, not sure if I'll have a herd left at the end. I had necropsies done on the first ones and they came back that they had pneumonia and ehd. The rest of the herd has the same symptoms. Right now we are using nuflor on everything we can and putting electrolytes in the water in hopes that some "just" have pneumonia and not both. A couple seem to be pulling through though.

Thank you all for the help. So far I have not heard of any confirmed cases of EHD here in southwest indiana. do have a few that have slightly arched backs and walking like they are kind of stiff if that gives anyone more ideas.

have also noticed that a few of my fawns right when they start to take their turn for the worst they seem colder than they should. have not taken a temp to know for sure how low it is though.

Wow , sorry to hear of such loses and I feel for you guys ! I don't know anything about EHD but for bad cases of pneumonia we always give LS 50 right in the windpipe ! Yup right in the windpipe between the ribs of the pipe ! It works wonders when given that way . Just don't go over 5cc at a time it's hard for them in large amounts as it goes right into their lungs. They'll cough a little but it really works up here in Wi . Just a thought !! Hope all turns around and in a hurry !

Ben I am in South East Illinois and we are battling ehd over here like crazy. I am S.E. of Mt. Vernon IL. Every farm I know of south of I-64 has had it so far. I have only lost a buck and a doe so far, but right now it looks like every doe on the farm has it but one. I had a buck and a doe that were down last night drooling with their head swaying ears laying flat with their front legs swollen.

This is how I am treating them. 6cc excede 6cc vitamin b complex 6 to 8cc dexamethasone 3cc banamine 2cc Texas ehd vaccine. Both were up this morning eating out of the feeder. Now they might be dead tomorrow but I have 3 other does I did this to last Monday and the are still alive.

This is my 5th year fighting this crap and I really think it is the dex that is helping the most. It is cheap and it works. I can't take credit for this treatment because I got it right here on the forums.

If your try this and it works let us know.

well we just had our first confirmed case of EHD. so you all were right! just hope we can get through this without losing too many more

Hi, Ben I am so sorry to hear of struggles with EHD. I hope the rest of your herd pulls through. I have a 6 year old buck that about a month ago had all the signs you are talking about drooling, arched back, drinking lots of water, discharge from nasal, congested, no appetite, and fever. The only different symptom was runny stool and his antlers were cold to the touch. I also had a couple fawns with similiar symptoms. He has lost a lot of weight. I have been giving him 10cc Dex, 3cc banimine, 8cc Excede, 5cc baytril, 6cc vitamin b and the fawns to only on a much smaller scale. The fawns seem to have recovered well. The buck was back to normal after 2nd round of shots 5 days apart. Then two weeks later he showed signs of it coming back gave him the same thing and hes acting normal again. I just hope it stays away for good this round. I also had buckets of ice water and soaked towels and laid them on him to bring down his fever when he was sedated. I am going to send blood off if it comes back again. Good luck with your deer, Ben

For what its worth I have treated 9 animals of ours since 7-24 for the same symptoms. None have died!!!

At first sign of tender feet, blinking, confused, heavy breathing.

Sedate them, and very first take a temp. If its over 103 put ice bags over them with water running under. ( Drop the temp as fast as possible )

I gave 2cc per 100 of dex and 4 per 100 of exceed. 4 per 100 of vitB complex, and 8 of pro bios right before they recover.

200cc lactate ringer with 10% dectrose subQ.

Then we dart dex on next day, draxxine the next. for 6 days.

Treat from there, but this has worked 100% for me. I'm not a vet and take this as a suggesttion, but i got it from 2 very well known vets.

Big key is dont take any chance, catch it early. Drop the fever and follow with a strong broad antibiotic.

Good luck

So sorry to hear of your troubles with the herd. Have you made any progress? I wish I could help you out, but I dont have much experience yet. Please let us know how things turn out

Ben,

We are just over the line into IL (about 40 minutes from Evansville) and have lost one to EHD. A neighboring farm has lost 6 from EHD. It is definitely in the area. We were able to get a vaccine from our vet in Grayville, IL and have not had anymore cases since darting with it.

have not lost any today. so thats a start! we are vaccinating and giving antibiotics non stop. We couldnt be doing it though without the help of you all!! We cannot even begin to explain how much we appreciate everyone on here!

are you darting the drugs or putting the deer out everyday? what signs and symptoms are you still seeing in the deer you suspect are infected and how long have they persisted? thanks

It depends. If they only need one shot I dart it. If its several we put them down. I hate to put a deer down for only one shot if they are actiing ok. We are still in the process of getting all our bucks down. It gets harder once they figure out that all of them are going to get shot, you know how that goes... also dpends on how many CCs. I really dont like darting 4 times to get 8 or 9ccs in.

arched backs. light/stiff walking, drinking a lot, drooling, loss of appetite, foaming at the mouth, pretty draggy, and ears down. Also after three autopsies they FINALLY said there were signs of EHD. This has been going on about two weeks

Has anyone lost any fawns to EHD or what they suspect to be EHD this year? I have one doe with every symptom you listed that had been a roller coaster ride for the past week, one day looks better next day barely hanging on.
