We have lost several fawns to EHD / suspected EHD. Some in southeast Illinois have too. The part that makes it hard for us in the southern half of Indiana is that there are maybe only ten of us down here.

Ben, You should have a good dialogue with Dr. Shipley at the Univ. of Illinois. He will at the very least, be able to instruct your vet how to treat your deer when necessary.

I also know a few good DVMs at West Lafayette who seem to know large animal issues very well.

I once spoke with a forest ranger in Southern IN who told me about the problems of blue tongue that had infected wild deer herds in IN and KT about 2 years ago. I learned a lot from him too. Cool guy. They immediately recognize when infectious diseases hit an area, b/c they communicate with one another in neighboring states. He was kind enough to offer me a "release place" for some Indiana deer we had been caring for.

Well just for an update yesterday my best buck (of course) starting showing bad signs of EHD. Could barely walk, was very confused, drooling a lot, urinating blood, and he didnt even move when we hit him with the dart to put him down. We put 8cc of dex, 5cc baytril, 6cc, b12, and i cant remember the last thing we gave him. he is still alive this morning so far. I didnt think he would even be alive last night. so thank you all

Just an update for everyone. So far we have lost 12 deer, including our best buck. It doesnt look like its going to stop anytime soon either.

I'm sorry to hear about everyone's trouble. You really cannot relax when it comes to EHD until after the first good frost. It seems to be popping up in more places every year. We lost 3/4 of our heard the first two years we were in business. After that we have not had a bad die off since. We basically built off of the deer that survived. It will make you question how much you want to be a deer farmer. My heart goes out to all of you, and I hope cold weather comes for you soon.

is any one doing anything about this

Have a two year old buck that won't eat and hadn't had much water as of about two weeks ago. I darted him whth 2cc Daraxxin and 2cc Dex. Wed. before last. Been out of town a few days but has been eating a little everyday and drinking some water. He has lost weight and looking thin. He does move around during the day but seams a little unstable. Seams to have a slight bit of labored breathing. kinda scared to knock him down but could treat him better if I did. Thought about another round of the same drugs. What do you think.

The only thing about knocking them down is that it puts a lot of stress on them, and if theyre really sick it could kill them. But, if its going to die anyways why not try so you atleast feel ike you have done all you can? Its a hard choice. With this EHD we have knocked some down so we can put multiple meds in them. The next day some will die and some will be doing much better. It can be a hard decision Dixie. Best of luck

Thank you all for the help. So far I have not heard of any confirmed cases of EHD here in southwest indiana. do have a few that have slightly arched backs and walking like they are kind of stiff if that gives anyone more ideas.

Definitely symptoms of EHD. Walking stiff is one of the first signs which is mostly from the knats stinging them and busting bloodvessels in legs which makes them very sore. Treat with Dex, excede, and banamine every other day is what we use.

Guys, here is a tip from someone who lost alot of deer to EHD/ Bluetongue. Walk your pens twice a day and look at every deer's eye movements. I have noticed that deer under stress from this virus usually blink their eyes more often than a deer that is non-stressed. This is the first sign I usually notice and if you can get 20 mg of dexamethasone in them at this stage you have a better chance of saving them. This sympton usually appears before the stiff walking, foaming and drooling and the segragation from the rest of the herd. Good luck to all.

Ben, are you saving any with the treatment you have used. Ehd is at farm's all around me, some with near total loss. I have a friend that only has one mature animal left. We treated them with the same med's that you are just smaller amount's because we darted all of it and have not had a one make it.

I still have not had this at my home farm but think if I do have one show symptom's I will sedate them to treat if that is working for other farm's.

Hope to find something that is working for other farm's so I will know what to do if this would ever hit my farm.

RLA: so far we have not been able to save any. But I think its because we were trying when they were too far gone already. I have a couple that are just now starting to show signs. We are going to put them down tonight and medicate them and I will let you know how that goes. I really hope we can save a few.

I think I may have had my first case of EHD this morning. Went out to feed bucks and had a yearling buck about 30 yards from me, I could hear him breathing like he had a ton of water in his lungs he was laying down and I walked up to him to see what that sound was and he was foaming heavily from his mouth, I made him stand and he was wobbling all over like to fall down a couple times. I knocked him down and gave him 20cc LA200, 10cc Dex, 6cc nuflor, whole tube of fawn paste to help with good bacteria. So for he is still alive, eating and walking around. we`ll see if he makes it. I should have given him vitiman B but didnt think about it till it was to late.
