Was just wandering how everyone utilizing Red cap is doing with bottle feeding so far this year, as you know we sent out our particular program and schedule to well over 100 people and I have talked to many already that seem to be doing well.

Please comment on your personal experience this yr regarding the use of Red Cap or whole cows milk from the grocery.

We are in our 4th week and are up to 12 oz 3 times a day, this has been one of our easiest years so far to date, we have had a few back off milk a little, we did have one get a loose stool for a few days, and even had one or 2 that got pretty dried and had trouple having a bowl movement, and we had 2 that got a little bloated but never stayed that way for very long, but all in all things are going well, fawns are growing like crazy.........cross my fingers and say my prayers..better yet I'll just say my prayers, crossing fingers really doesnt help.....

the schedule you sent is working well for us, so far not one problem they took to the milk right off the bat and everything seems to be working

Rick you really did us new guys a great service with your program. We went with your program up to the amount of milk per feeding!!We are in the 3rd week and we are at 12oz 4 times a day and they are doing great! The only thing is we are finding that they are not on feed as much as they should so i think i will back down to 3 times a day!!Billie jo says she gives them all they want with no replacer added and she says there have been no problems with her fawns!!I guess there are different ways to go and red cap will work!! Thank you for making the first year so smooth for this farm!!!!!

Rick, I thought that I would need to give you a call sooner or later, but the babies are doing great on your recipe. For the past 15 years, we have gotten our milk from a dairy farmer nearby who milked Brown Swiss cows-(very high in butterfat content) He retired last year, so our milk source was gone. Thanks for putting the result of your trial and error on paper. We have not had any problems at all. Darren

Rick we still have your program on file. We started with fawns last year so I do not know if we will fawn this year.

Our buck fawn was frisky the end of December so I separated them. Like a farmer told me if you seen him try once he already has tried 20 times.

If we fawn it will be mid July I will let you know then.

Thanks again,

This is our 1st year on red cap, We have fed zoologic the last two years. We had pretty good luck on zoologic but the red cap seems much easier for us and less messy. The fawns seem to get started quicker and like it better than anything else we have tried. I have been somewhat apprehensive about bragging on how well they are doing on it because thing can turn south so quicky.... but so far we love it ... thank you rick and harry and whoever else was brave enough to be the guinny pigs for the rest of us....

rick thanks for your feeding schedule so far it has worked really well for us. we are on week 2 feeding 8-9oz with 1 tsp of lol per bottle. when should we expect the fawns to pellet?

Rick,

On week 4 with the first two and they are eating 11 1/2 ounces. Other 4 are doing well at the end of week 1. Thanks for the schedule!

I am so glad that most everyone is having good results I was getting really worried after sending out to so many

Pelleted poop can come at 3 days or it may not come for 3 weeks, but it should have some consistancy to it, a turd for lack of a better term, and eventually you will see that turn into a turd of pellets and eventually all pellets, we dont usually stimulate after 2- 2 1/2 weeks and when we do normally only once a day...

Thanks for your comments and lets keep this thread going by giving updates on each ones experiences, I belive it will be a good learning experience.

we are having a little problem with the fawns on redcap, they seem to be bowl movements do seem to be very dry and it takes them some time to get it out. This makes me wonder if they are going as much as they should they seem to be going i would say once a day maybe once every other day. Is there anything i can give them tonight after feeding them milk I gave each of them about 2 oz of warm water in a bottle and they drank it ,i dont know if this will help them or not

Ekljr

We occassionally have the same or similar problem, if we feel they are having trouble we will stimulate every feeding until stool jgets less dry. Normally a bowl movement once a day is what i like to see....

If needed you can also add 1cc mineral oil to borrle once a day untill stoll loosens up should not take more that a day or 2....... in most severe cases an enema may be required, I personnally have never had to do this

Dont know about the warm water, never done that either...

Rick what do you do when one gets the scours on red cap???I have one this am feeding that just squirted it out and it was fine yesterday!!He is out runnin and playin now so i dont think its bothering him yet but i want to get a jump on it!!!!

We are feeding Red Cap Milk.We also add 1 cup Fox Valley per gallon. The fawns seem to be doing very well. Rick, thanks for the recipe.

Mike we had a problem with scours last year and we where told to use All Natural Correction and it worked over night so i would give it a try I forget where we ordered it but the container says Schmucker's Botanicals

Mike and Angie,

There are others on here that are more qualified to address scours than I am but depending on circumstances I will do nothing to worst case give antibiotics, sounds like she is outside if she is running etc.... if this is new to her grass maybe causing her to be loose, if this is the case and if she stays or gets watery you can use spectam in their milk, this usually works well, pumpkin in their bottle can help, fast track water dispersible helps gel up their milk and it can help and in the worst case I will use SMZ's that Mitch has mentioned one here, we use it once a day for 3 days usually knocks it out

HI Rick , Just wanted to let you know red cap working fine for me. A little loose when i put them outside for a day, Doing fine now at 4 weeks. Thanks !!!
